PhD Position: Novel Antifouling Coatings Based on Enzymes, Technical University of Denmark.

Joint Ph.D. project between The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (www.kt.dtu.dk) and Hempel A/S (www.Hempel.com).

Background and aim:
Growth of marine organisms on the hull of ships (fouling) is a major problem resulting in increased fuel consumption, reduced speed and increased docking times and maintenance cost. The fouling is usually controlled by painting the underwater parts of ships with antifouling coatings. The best performing solution for antifouling paint is based on TriButylTin, but has effectively been banned and replaced by other solutions. Most of the present, tin-free and solvent-based coating systems rely on the action of Cu₂O and organic biocides. Although this is considered friendlier to the environment there is a need to develop better solutions. In this project we will attempt to develop new types of antifouling coatings based on enzymes.

Project contents
The project will consist of:

Literature survey on antifouling coatings and enzymatic possibilities.
Laboratory testing of enzymatic solutions.
Design and formulation of novel antifouling coatings.
Test and evaluation of novel solutions.
Explaining the underlying physical and chemical mechanisms of the new systems.
Full-scale testing.

During the project there will be close co-operation with coating producer Hempel A/S, in particular the Spanish R&D center.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering and top grades.

PhD Position:Determinants of political beliefs, Denmark

Job Description: At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, five PhD scholarships within the programme “Beliefs in Politics: Actors and Determinants (Elites, Frames, and Personalities)” are available for appointment for a period of three years as of October 1, 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period, and at least two of the three years, the workplace will be in Odense, Denmark. Upon approval by the advisor and the programme director up to one year can be spent at a foreign university. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

We look for candidates with a Master Degree in political science, political psychology or political communication (or a related field) who have distinguished themselves at the MA level and, preferably, have written a Master thesis about social, institutional, psychological and contextual determinants of political beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. We prefer applicants whose strengths lie within methods, quantitative and/or qualitative. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.

The PhD scholarships are funded by the Danish government as “mobility scholarships” which means that candidates from the University of Southern Denmark are not eligible to apply.

The application must include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, propositions/hypotheses, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description cannot exceed 7 pages. In addition to the full project description, a summary of no more than 250 words must be included.

The project must relate to the general theme of the programme. We are interested in the formation of political beliefs at both the elite and the mass level, and we particularly welcome projects that explicitly integrate insights from political science, (political) psychology, communication theory, and genetics/biology. In spite of the cross-disciplinary ambitions of the programme, the project must be relevant to political science. When we select PhD students for the programme, we are eager to cover the following broad sub-themes:

• The institutional, organizational, political and psychological determinants of elite communication and framing strategies (elites include politicians, experts, journalists, etc.).
• The influence of elite information, communication and framing strategies on the attitudes and behaviour of other elite groups.
• The effect of (a) elite communication and framing strategies and (b) quality of information on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour.
• The influence of individual level variables, in particular personality traits and genetic factors on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour. The research programme has just finished a survey among Danish twins on political attitudes and behaviour, and a representative survey on personality traits and political attitudes and behaviour. PhD students will have access to these data sources.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad for a semester or more. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. All activities are fully funded by the research programme. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.

Job Description: Traditionally the externalities of transport have been well researched and described for land based transport like road and rail. This is however not the case for maritime transport. As the major externalities of maritime transport are contribution to pollution and global warming the Department of Environmental and Business Economics would like enhance its research into the field of sustainable maritime transport by economic valuation of shipping externalities.

Job Description: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions

The Department of Border Region Studies, at Campus Sønderborg, invites applications for a PhD Fellowship to be filled by November 1, 2010 and for a period of three years.

The Department of Border Region Studies (IFG) is rooted in the unique history of the Southern Danish border region. At the same time, the department has a close relationship with the business community and the cultural institutions of the region. The comparative aspect including other (border) regions in Europe is particularly strong within the regional studies and within the border region studies. Due to a strong focus on comparative aspects the department has developed a broad international research network within Europe. In addition, the department has a special obligation to carrying out research relating to the German minority in Southern Jutland.

The fellowship is part of the research project: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions.

Five European universities cooperate in this project which is funded by the European Science Foundation.

Under the umbrella of the overall programme, the aim of the fellowship is to analyse the interplay of labour market mobility and processes of familiarity and unfamiliarity as explanatory factors of levels in regional cohesion. A Long Durée case study is to be conducted on labour mobility in the Danish-German border region for the period spanning from the first half of the 19th century to the present day. As Danish-German border region we define roughly the territory of the former Duchy of Schleswig. The Duchy of Schleswig is challenging from a research perspective as its status has changed several times during the stipulated period. The composition of national majorities and minorities interchanges as well. Thereby the case illustrates the changing role of region, identity and state in processes of re- and de-bordering. The Long Durée perspective is used to illustrate the political, social and cultural expressions of cohesion at a small geographical scale and the importance of different, competing concepts of regions and regionalisms over time.

Candidates should hold a university degree in history or related disciplines as ethnology, anthropology or cultural studies. The master thesis should be graded at least with B according to the ECTS scale. Advanced knowledge of English is required in addition to mastering Danish and German at least at reading level. Experience with archival studies will be considered an advantage. The application must include a project proposal description of max 8 pages. The project description must include a clear research problem, which falls within the theme of the project and focuses on the Danish-German border region. It should also include a discussion of relevant theory and scholarly literature on border regions, as well as methods and data planned to be used.

Two PhD positions are available in organometallic chemistry and catalysis at DTU Chemistry.

Project description:
The purpose of the first project is to study the dehydrogenation and decarbonylation of alcohols and polyalcohols with transition metal catalysts. The project is part of a larger strategic research project funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research where the aim is to develop new methods for converting biomass into fuels and energy.

The purpose of the second project is to study new aspects of the Grignard addition reaction as well as the dehydrogenative coupling between alcohols and amines. The project is funded by the Torkil Holm Foundation and DTU Chemistry.

Applicants should indicate if one of the two positions is preferred. Both positions will be available from 1 October 2010 or soon thereafter.

A PhD position is available at the newly established Center for Genomic Epidemiology (CGE) at Center for Biological Sequence Analysis, DTU Systems Biology.

Within a few years, the price for whole-genome sequencing of bacterial genomes will have become so low that it is no longer a limiting factor. Rather, the challenges will lay in how to assemble, process and handle the large amount of data in a standardized way that will make the information useful for diagnosis, outbreak investigation, source tracing and surveillance. It is the aim of CGE to provide the bioinformatics and scientific foundation for future web-based solutions, including developing tools for extraction of biologically and epidemiologically relevant information from the sequence data. It is a key objective of the PhD project to develop methods for predicting, based on the sequence data, an organism’s potential as a pathogen or a non-pathogen. Initial focus will be on well characterized pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus, but later the developed procedures should be expanded to other organisms.

Qualifications:

MSc degree in bioinformatics or in life science (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical engineering) combined with documented experience within bioinformatics.
Excellent programming skills. Experience in Perl or Python or a similar programming language.
Familiar with working on UNIX platforms.
Able to work independently and to plan and carry out complicated tasks, while also being part of a large and dynamic group.
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Interest in microbiology and global disease control.

Job Description: You will design neutron scattering instruments for ESS using the tools developed in the McStas simulation package. This work will be carried out in collaboration with instrument experts located both in Lund and around the world. For the judgement of the instrument performance, you will perform virtual experiments on samples typical for the particular instrument. In this connection, you will take part in the development of the tools and algorithms to correctly describe neutron scattering samples.

Qualifications
You must have a suitable university degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D., respectively) within Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or equivalent. You should have good computing skills, have a good sense of data quality, and be able to work within a team. Furthermore, you should have a good understanding of modeling of physical properties. Specific experience within X-ray and neutron scattering is considered an advantage, but is not required.

Job description
The successful candidate will join the medical/industrial dosimetry group and is expected to perform research in high dose dosimetry aimed at developing dosimetry methods for industrial applications of radiation. The candidate will also participate in supervision of PhD or Master Students.

In addition, the candidate will be involved in customer-oriented activities within the scope of the accredited Risø High Dose Reference Laboratory (HDRL), e.g. validation of low-energy electron accelerators. Risø HDRL services the radiation processing industry in Denmark and abroad, and in particular the medical device industry that sterilizes products using radiation.

The drinking water projects have a specific emphasis on analyzing and optimizing biological rapid sand filtration technologies for both bulk and trace pollutant removal. The successful candidates will be employed at DTU Environment within the framework of the Urban Water Technology graduate school (www.urbanwatertech.dk), and work under the supervision of the PIs and post-doctoral associates. DTU Environment offers state-of-the art chemical, microbial, and biomolecular analytical facilities, process laboratories, and equipment to execute this project. Job Description: The molecular microbial ecology group aims to recruit two highly qualified PhD candidates to conduct research and training in microbiology and biotechnology. More specifically, applications will be considered for two research programs:

1) Microbial Metagenomics and Metatranscriptomics
The aim of this project is to further develop and improve the modern microbial metagenomics tools to uncover a range of novel enzymatic activities in a natural environment. In this project we will use high throughput sequencing to explore the bacterial biodiversity and composition in various natural environments to a hitherto unseen level.

2) Survival and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria
The aim of this project is to establish a fundamental understanding of survival and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the childcare institutional environment. Formation of bacterial coatings on surfaces known as biofilms, may create micro-environments where bacteria can survive and possibly multiply in the external environment. Biofilms have also been shown to protect bacteria against disinfectants. A basic understanding of the overall incidence of bacteria and their lifestyles in institutional environments is therefore an indispensable prerequisite for successfully combating infection in institutional childcare.

The fellowships are open to both Danish and international applicants. We expect that applicants have obtained an MSc degree in biology or biochemistry, a good grasp of theoretical concepts, and some expertise in laboratory techniques used in molecular microbial ecology, DNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Fluency in English is a requirement.

An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the supervisors, Søren Sørensen and Anders Priemé and by Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen.

The number of recipients each year may vary depending on the need and the budget approved by the President of AS. The benefits of the fellowship are as follows:

The recipients are not allowed to receive any other fellowships granted as monthly salary installments.

Job Description: The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) Program supports high calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities, or other research institutions outside of Canada.

Supplements of up to $6,000 are available to active CGS (master’s or doctoral) or eligible Vanier CGS holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research studies outside Canada for a defined period. A total of 250 awards are available each year and will be divided among the three granting agencies to reflect the distribution of CGS and eligible Vanier CGS across the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related disciplines: 125 for SSHRC, 80 for NSERC and 45 for CIHR.

Each university will be allocated a set number of supplements by each granting agency, as appropriate. The Faculty (School) of Graduate Studies will be informed of the number of supplements available to them in each of the three areas of research disciplines. The Faculty (School) of Graduate Studies is required to set up an internal selection process to select which applications (requesting CGS-MSFSS funds) are to be forwarded to the respective granting agencies.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this program, you must:

* be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
* be registered at an eligible Canadian institution at the time of application;
* for SSHRC applicants: have accepted or hold a Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS (This link will take you to another Web site master’s or This link will take you to another Web site doctoral level) or a This link will take you to another Web site Vanier CGS (if eligible) administered by SSHRC;
* for NSERC applicants: have accepted or hold an Alexander Graham Bell CGS (master’s or doctoral level) or a Vanier CGS (if eligible) administered by NSERC;
* for CIHR applicants: have accepted or hold a Frederick Banting or Charles Best CGS (master’s or doctoral level) or a Vanier CGS (if eligible) administered by CIHR;
* undertake your proposed trip abroad no earlier than the competition deadline date; and
* not hold, or have held, any other CGS-MSFSS during the course of your graduate studies.

Award value

The value of the CGS-MSFSS is up to $6,000, based on the information and budget justification provided in the application. The supplements are non-renewable.

The supplement will be paid separately from the related CGS or Vanier CGS.

Application procedures

Universities are allocated a predetermined number of CGS-MSFSS supplements on an annual basis, in proportion to the number of CGS and Vanier CGS held at that university. Allocations are specific to each granting agency. If you are a qualified applicant, you must complete the necessary documentation and submit it to your Faculty (School) of Graduate Studies for consideration.

The common tri-agency application form is available on the Web sites of the respective granting agencies. Only this form must be used to apply for the CGS-MSFSS.

You will be required to provide the following information:

* the name and contact information of your current research supervisor and of the host supervisor, and the name and location of the foreign institution where you intend on pursuing your research / study activities;
* a maximum two-page description of your intended research activities during your research study period abroad (including objectives, methodology, time lines and expected outcomes), an indication as to how this relates to your main graduate research topic, and a description of the potential benefits that you will derive from working at, or attending, the host institution in relation to your current research objectives; and
* a budget that provides estimates for costs of travel, living and other expenses during your research study period abroad (to a maximum of $6,000).

In addition, both your current research supervisor and the potential host supervisor must submit letters detailing their support of your research study period abroad (maximum one page each). The host supervisor must also indicate that they have the resources available (financial [if any], supervision time, equipment, library access, etc.) to support your planned research activities.

Job Description: Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in master’s or doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering. The CGS will be offered to the top-ranked applicants at each level (master’s and doctoral) and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered an NSERC PGS. This support allows these scholars to fully concentrate on their studies and seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields. NSERC encourages interested and qualified Aboriginal students to apply.

Since total NSERC scholarship support is limited to a maximum of four years full-time equivalence, scholars are encouraged to complete their studies in an expeditious manner.

Are you eligible for scholarship support?
To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, you must:

* be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada;
* hold, or expect to hold (at the time you take up the award), a degree in science or engineering from a university whose standing is recognized by NSERC (if you have a degree in a field other than science or engineering, NSERC may accept your application at its discretion);

* you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or
* if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program, you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or

The objective of this program is to expand the role of the MuseumsQuartier Wien as one of the world’s largest contemporary cultural complexes and to promote international cultural exchange, in particular with Austria’s direct neighbours and other European countries. Since the beginning of 2003, seven live/work studios have been available in quartier21 to international artists who do not normally reside in Austria.

Eligibility and Conditions
- There are no age limits for stipends.

-Stipends are awarded for a minimum period of two month and a maximum of six months.
-Stipends in quartier21 require the artists’ presence on location, i.e. artists are required to spend at least three quarters of the stipend period in the MuseumsQuartier.

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in the research area of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs). Metal-Organic Frameworks are an emerging class of materials with exceptional porosity on the molecular and mesoscale. Consisting of metal atoms or clusters linked in a periodic fashion through organic molecules, MOFs have pores of 0.5-5 nm diameter, walls just one atom thick, and surface areas of several thousand square metres per gram. The utility of these materials for gaseous fuel storage has recently been demonstrated.The position would involve the development of new MOFs, with a focus on light-weight metals such as Mg, Ca and Al. These MOFs would be specifically tailored towards hydrogen storage, natural gas (methane) storage or carbon dioxide capture applications. The Top-Up Scholarship will provide the opportunity to work with people who are leaders in their field, a stipend and a secondment to an international laboratory.

Lillian Passmore Donovan Scholarship 2011

The Scholarship has been implemented to recognise the contributions of Lillian Passmore Donovan as an Indigenous woman committed to the field of social work and social justice. Lillian worked for three decades across a range of agencies, both government and non-government in rural and urban settings. Her final position was with the Victim Support Unit in the Department of Justice. She also worked for the Western Australian Department for Community Development, the Aboriginal Accommodation Service and the Manguri Aboriginal Corporation. She worked in South Australia with the Department of Community Welfare as a Senior Aboriginal Community Development Worker and Senior Supervisor. In recognition of the quality of her practice and Scholarship, Lillian won the Peter Jordan Award for Social Justice when graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Social work.The Scholarship is aimed specifically at Indigenous people with an interest in pursuing a career in social work.

Applications are open to all Indigenous Australians who are either currently undertaking Year 12 studies, or mature age applicants wishing to pursue a career in social work, or are currently enrolled in an undergraduate social work degree at Curtin University.

The Scholarship will meet the cost of the student fees each year for a Commonwealth Supported place, plus a $2,000 cash payment per year to assist with costs associated with studying (textbooks, incidental expenses etc) for the normal expected duration of the degree for which the Scholarship is offered.

The University reserves the right to reduce the amount of assistance where applicants are in receipt of other Scholarships.
Students will only be awarded one continuing Scholarship. A continuing Scholarship is defined as a Scholarship that has more than one payment.
The fee component of the Scholarship will be paid directly to the student fee account in two installments per year to be paid prior to the census date relevant to each enrolled semester.
The cash payment of the Scholarship will be paid to the student’s nominated bank account in two installments of $1,000 (pro rata if part-time) per year. First and second semester payments will occur post census dates (thus approx mid-end April and mid-end Sept).

Job Description: The Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. MIFRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.

Eligibility Criteria
a) Applicants must be intending to undertake a graduate research degree at the UoM.

The only exceptions are as follows:

* applicants enrolled in the MPsych/PhD or the SJD are eligible to apply for the APA, MRS/MIRS and MIFRS/IPRS from the second year of their course.
* applicants enrolled in the DEd are only eligible to apply for the MRS/MIRS and MIFRS/IPRS.

b) A scholarship will not be offered if the applicant has already completed a qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought. The only exception is as follows:

* if the student currently holds a masters by coursework they can be considered for a scholarship for masters by research studies.

c) Applicants who have commenced the graduate research degree for which they are seeking scholarship must have at least 12 months full time or equivalent candidature remaining from January 1st in the following year. A scholarship will not be offered to a student who, as a result of prior candidature and/or prior scholarship, is entitled to a maximum tenure of less than 12 months.

The only exception to this is where a fee remission scholarship other than an IPRS/MIFRS was held previously and the student requires an MIFRS for less than 12 months.

d) Applicants will only be considered for an IPRS in one selection round. Students who commenced their course in the year immediately before the current round of IPRS offers, and who were not considered in the previous round of IPRS offers, will be automatically identified by the MSO, considered for an IPRS and notified if they are to be offered a scholarship. An additional scholarship application is not required of these students.

e) Students who are seeking an MIFRS following the commencement of their course must submit an additional scholarship application (see section 2 for application details). Each faculty / graduate school will determine whether to award MIFRSs to students who have commenced the course for which a MIFRS is sought.

f) Applicants will only be considered for scholarship in one department at any one time.

Applicants who are interested in applying for a scholarship in more than one department should discuss research and scholarship options with the departments of interest before lodging their application for scholarship.

Job Description: In 1895, Augusta Zadow became the first female Inspector of Factories in South Australia. She played a crucial role in securing better conditions for workers in factories, particularly women and children. Many of the working conditions we now take for granted are due to the efforts of Augusta Zadow.

The annual Zadow Awards were introduced in 1994 (Centenary of the Factories Act and Women’s Suffrage in South Australia) in recognition of the work carried out by Zadow, who worked tirelessly to bring about health and safety reforms in the workplace.

In 2005, the Augusta Zadow Scholarships were initiated. Two annual scholarships of up to $10,000 each are awarded each year to assist with occupational health, safety and welfare improvements undertaken by, or for the benefit of, women in South Australia.

The Augusta Zadow Committee (the Committee) assess applications and awards the Augusta Zadow Scholarships. The Committee includes representatives from SafeWork SA, WorkCover SA, Business SA, SA Unions, the Office for Women and the Working Women’s Centre.

Aims of the Scholarship

The scholarships aim to encourage initiatives that improve occupational health, safety and welfare outcomes by, or for the benefit of, women in South Australia.

USE OF SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are to be used to undertake:

* further education
* research
and/or
* occupational health, safety and welfare initiatives.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Applicants for the Augusta Zadow Scholarships must be:

Job Description: The RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research was established in 1989 to advance the cause of animal welfare in Australia. The scholarship is named after Mr Alan White, a past President of RSPCA Australia and a past President of RSPCA Queensland. The Alan White Scholarship is available to full-time or part-time students in Australian tertiary institutions for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. The 2010 scholarship award will be for $7,780 and can be used towards any area of research that fits the general scholarship criteria.

Scholarship criteria

The following general criteria apply to applications for either type of award:

1. Applications should be for a discrete research project (which may or may not form part of a larger research program).

Job Description: The Aged Care Nursing Scholarship Scheme is an Australian Government initiative aimed at encouraging more people to enter aged care nursing, particularly in regional, rural and remote Australia.

How to apply
The Aged Care Nursing Scholarship Scheme – undergraduate application form will become available online once the scheme opens.

Value of scholarship
The Scheme provides financial assistance of up to $5,000 per semester, to a maximum of $30,000 per applicant, to assist in meeting costs incurred while studying undergraduate nursing. Scholarships will be available to students in any year of an undergraduate nursing degree.

Criteria
The scholarships are only available for courses leading to a qualification to practice as a Registered/Division 1 nurse. Up to 10 of these scholarships are designated for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.

In order to be considered for the scholarship you must be currently enrolled or intending to enrol in an undergraduate, accredited, pre-registration (entry to practice) nursing course at an Australian university

Currently enrolled or intending to enrol in a graduate entry, accredited, pre-registration (entry to practice) nursing course at an Australian university
OR
Currently enrolled or intending to enrol in the Masters of Nursing Program at an Australian University, leading to first-time registration as a Registered/Division 1 nurse.

After Completion of my studies

Fourth year students must provide copies of their final results within one month after completion of their studies in order to ensure placement according to the contractual Obligations (Contract will provide more information)

The Scholarship will pay for Registration, Tuition, Prescribed books and Official Accommodation provided by the University. Only accommodation contracted by the relevant university will be considered.

Please note that:

a) Only specified accounts will be paid. When purchasing books, every item must be specified. Only prescribed study material will be covered by the scholarship.
b) This Department pays, within the amount of the scholarship, only appropriate expenses and does not pay out any unused money to the student.
c) All claims for payment must be submitted to your NSFAS office by not later than 1 March 2011 for the first semester and 1 August 2011 for the second semester to ensure that all accounts are paid timeously.
d) Full study fees will only be settled after April, however a minimum payment will be made by NSFAS after receipt of a proforma invoice.

To enable the Department to keep abreast of your academic progress and to authorize the payment of scholarship monies for further years, it will be necessary for you to give an exposition of your intended curriculum for each year of study. This should clearly indicate your major and ancillary subjects.

On enrolling at an Institution of Higher Learning for the new academic year, kindly fill in the name and address of the above-mentioned departmental representative on the appropriate section of the registration form. This will ensure that both a progress report as well as your examination results will be forwarded to the Department. Such action will expedite the payment of your scholarship money by NSFAS.

You may not change your field of study for which the scholarship was awarded.

DAAD(German Academic Exchange Service) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) is able to offer scholarships for postgraduate studies at South African universities

Job Description : As part of the “In-Country Scholarship Programme”, in which more than two dozen African universities
and university networks participate and which annually supports some 800 African postgraduates. The programme is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The scholarship is aimed at university staff development in the first instance, without neglecting other sector demands for academically trained personnel.
The NRF lauds this contribution of the German government as being of invaluable support to its own efforts of significantly increasing the number of post-graduate candidates receiving quality education & training; of contributing significantly to our national efforts of human capital development, especially at our tertiary institutions but also for the public and private sectors; and of tangibly engaging in the South African PhD Project and, thereby, fulfilling one of the key strategic objectives of the NRF VISION 2015.
Target Group
The programme addresses candidates who aim at acquiring a Master’s or doctoral degree. Preference will be given to young South African or permanent resident university staff members or candidates considered for teaching / research staff recruitment either for their own university or any other institution of higher education in South Africa. Staff members should be exempted from teaching for full-time studies. In exceptional cases, a limited extent of teaching obligations may be accepted but has to be motivated in writing to the NRF. The host institution has to document precisely and convincingly the quantity and content of the lecturing duties and their compliance with the prevailing goal of the academic qualification of the candidate. An intrinsic link between the teaching obligations and the content of the degree programme is indispensible.
DAAD and NRF offer up to 100 scholarships (first awards) for Master’s and Doctoral studies in 2011.
Scholarship Details
The scholarships are designed for full-time two-year Master’s courses or three-year doctoral degree studies. Note: the initial award is for one year only. For extensions an annual progress report will have to be completed and submitted to the NRF. Scholarship values are as follows:
Master’s courses: ZAR 40,000.00 p.a.
PhD degree studies: ZAR 65,000.00 p.a. Upgrading students are expected to complete an annual progress report, stating clearly that they have upgraded their studies. Upgrades will be included in the DAAD/NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship Programme. Scholarship holders are not allowed to change to any other DAAD or NRF funding streams during the tenure of the award. However scholarship holders are encouraged to apply on completion of their funding (eg. completion of masters degree and wanting to apply for doctoral funding). Additional funds are not awarded to awardees on this scholarship for research funding, travel grants to conferences except for the short term (2-6 months) research visits to Germany mentioned below.
Short-term research scholarships (2 – 6 months) tenable at a German university
In selected cases, the scholarship-holder may apply for a short-term research fellowship (duration 2-6 months) in Germany where parts of the thesis-related research would significantly gain from this research visit because of required equipment, co-supervision or similar reasons. The applicant will have to present a current invitation by a German professor who is willing to supervise the research during the envisaged stay in Germany, besides a convincing letter of motivation and a clearly defined time schedule for the research stay.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be South African citizens or hold permanent residence status in South Africa (in the latter case, both certified proof of employment and residency must be provided). Applicants from third countries are eligible only for PhD programmes and under the condition that they are employed at the university where the PhD is to be pursued. Applicants must have obtained an accumulative average of 65% and above to be considered Female candidates and those belonging to historically disadvantaged groups are particularly encouraged to apply An age limit of 36 years at the time of application applies Applicants may come from all those fields of study that have a strong relevance to national development (natural sciences, mathematics, ICT, engineering, agricultural sciences, applied social sciences).
However, the humanities and fine arts are excluded from this programme. Applicants who already hold a qualification for the level of funding they are applying for are not eligible. Scholarships-holders are allowed to hold supplementary bursaries, grants or emoluments with unlimited values. However the scholarship may not be held simultaneously with a bursary/scholarship from any other NRF source or administered source without prior NRF/ DAAD permission. If the applicant does receive supplementary funding during the duration of the scholarship, this will need to be declared to the NRF/ DAAD. Scholarship-holders may not hold full-time salaried employment during the duration of the scholarship. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) introduced Bursary Scheme for the provision of financial support to students at Honours, Masters and Doctoral study levels.

Job Description: The scheme seeks to address blockages (including low retention and throughput rates) in the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) human capital development. In particular, to increase the base for the supply of Honours graduates eligible for entry into Masters Degrees. The envisaged impact is an increased supply of students for the Doctoral programmes, leading to a significant increase in the number of PhD graduates across all economic sectors, necessary for a robust National System of Innovation (NSI).
2. Objectives
Funding of postgraduate students and the training of researchers is key for addressing the human capital development challenges in South Africa. To address the challenge of human resource renewal in SET the Innovation Bursary Scheme aims to:
· increase student enrolment at Honours’, Masters and Doctoral levels;
· address skills shortages in the fields of Science Engineering and Technology
(SET) by increasing the workforce that has postgraduate degrees in SET;
and
· increase the pool of suitably qualified young, women and black scientists andknowledge workers in the NSI from which academic staff at Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) may be recruited.
3. Fields of study
Support will be provided to students studying in Science, Engineering and Technology study areas aligned with national priorities and the DST’s Grand Challenges. These will include but not limited to biotechnology, cellular and molecular biology, engineering disciplines, computing science, physics and astronomy, mathematical sciences, nanotechnology, chemistry, earth sciences, ecology and medical sciences.
4. Funding eligibility
The bursaries will be awarded to South African citizens and permanent residents studying full-time at South African Universities and Universities of Technology in the following categories:
· Students registered for Honours’, final year of study for a four-year degree, Masters or Doctoral degrees.
· Qualifying students who have received the Innovation bursaries at Honours or Master’s degree level will be given preference to continue with their studies for a higher research degree.
· Students who will be in their final year of study for a four-year degree and have given an undertaking to pursue a Master’s degree upon completion.
· Students who will be completing an Honours degree and have given an undertaking to pursue a Master’s degree upon completion.
5. Value of the bursary
The bursary value will be set at a sufficiently attractive level to provide an incentive to persuade students to pursue postgraduate studies in the light of financial challenges and expectations. The value of the awards will initially be set as follows:.
a. Honours’ students will receive R35 000 for one academic year.
b. Master’s students will be receiving R60 000 per annum for two years. In addition each student may access a once- off allocation of R10 000 for conference attendance or a study visit during the course of the two years.
c. Doctoral students will receive R90 000 per annum for three years. In addition each student may access a maximum of R40 000 for international study visits or conference presentations, and up to R15 000 for local conference attendance within the three-year period. Description:The Government of Kenya and the Republic of South Africa signed an Agreement for cooperation in science and technology in August 2004. Description: On the 28 August 2003, South Africa signed an agreement on cooperation in science and technology with Japan, followed two years later by a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) aimed at its implementation as part of an annual cycle of joint research funding between the two countries. Following five successful joint calls for proposals, from 2005 to 2009, the NRF is pleased to announce the sixth such call for 2010, and herewith invite all interested parties to submit their applications, using the form accompanying this document by a date no later than that indicated. Only 4 projects will be funded in 2010.

In this year, Joint research project proposals shall be submitted to the relevant authorities in both countries for evaluation (the JSPS in Japan and the National Research Foundation in South Africa).

Value & Duration:
The annual value of the scholarship is $7,500. The scholarship is tenable for two semesters which are normally consecutive.
Eligibile Courses:

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) and The University of Western Australia (UWA) are offering postgraduate research scholarships each year to students from the People’s Republic of China who intend to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at UWA.
UWA will provide a scholarship for tuition fees and health insurance for selected students and the CSC will consider the applications of these students for a living allowance as prescribed from time to time by the Chinese Government, a return airfare to Australia by the most economical route, and visa application fees.
Only applicants intending to enrol in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program are eligible. If the selected Chinese students successfully complete the requirements of the program, they will be conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy degree by UWA.
Eligibility Criteria:
China Scholarships will only be available to those applicants who:
• Will be citizens and permanent residents of the People’s Republic of China at the time of application
• Are not be currently working or studying abroad (outside the People’s Republic of China);
• Agree to return to China upon completion of their studies and/or research;
• Are awarded an unconditional offer of enrolment at The University of Western Australia, which is subject to the applicant also being successful in applying for a CSC award. They must therefore fulfil the relevant academic entry requirements set by The University of Western Australia for all international scholarship holders, including a high level of English language proficiency;

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and the Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF) are funded by The University of Western Australia.
Both of these scholarships cover tuition fees and health insurance premiums only. Adelaide Graduate Research Scholarships

Job Description:Up to 5 AGRS Scholarships may be available for international students from any country, who have recently graduated from the University of Adelaide, to undertake postgraduate research at the University of Adelaide in semester 2, 2010.
Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for consideration a student must:

* be completing their four year undergraduate degree including first class honours in a research based honours program or masters degree with a sufficient research component to be approved by the Research Education Development Committee as a degree acceptable for entry to the PhD. ie a Masters degree including a minimum of 12 points of research at the University of Adelaide in semester 1, 2010 OR have completed the above in 2009;
* be eligible to enrol as a commencing student in a full-time postgraduate research program at the University of Adelaide in semester 2, 2010;
* be an international student; and
* not be currently enrolled in the higher degree by research program at the University of Adelaide for which the student is applying for a scholarship.
* Currently enrolled PhD students and applicants who applied in previous international scholarship rounds are not eligible to apply again.

Recipients MUST be able to commence their research program by 30 September 2010. Under no circumstances can the scholarship be deferred to 2011.

Benefits

Benefits are payment of full tuition fees for the normal duration of the program and an annual living allowance ($22,500 in 2010). The allowance will be paid for two years for a Masters degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only). No other allowances will be paid. The scholarship does not provide an OSHC allowance.

Job Description:The University of Adelaide offers a scholarships scheme for international students undertaking postgraduate research study. Its purpose is to attract high quality overseas postgraduate students to areas of research strength in the University of Adelaide to support its research effort. The selection for scholarships is extremely competitive.

Up to 10 prestigious scholarships may be available in the mid year round of scholarships for 2010 to outstanding international students from any country undertaking postgraduate research in any academic discipline.
The ASI provides:

1. Course tuition fees for two years for a Masters degree by Research and three years for a Doctoral research degree (an extension is possible for doctoral programs only);
2. Health insurance cover for students; and
3. An annual living allowance of approximately $22,250 (2010 value) for the normal duration of the program.

Applicants should hold at least the equivalent of an Australian First Class Honours degree. This is a four year degree with a major research project in the final year. Other criteria that will be taken into consideration is undergraduate performance, bachelor and honours awards and scholarships, other postgraduate degrees, publications in internationally refereed journals, the presentation of conference papers and relevant industry experience.

Applications for these scholarships are always highly competitive. Generally ASI recipients have completed a Masters degree including a significant research component and have several publications and relevant work and research experience.
Conditions

* ASI Scholarship will be awarded strictly on academic merit. Extra-curricular achievements will not be considered.
* Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible.
* Those undertaking research via remote candidature are ineligible.
* International applicants are not eligible for an ASI if they have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award, unless they can establish that they were unable to apply for an ASI in the last round of the previous calendar year.
* International applicants who have not provided evidence of their meeting English language proficiency requirements by the closing date are not eligible for an ASI.
* International applicants must not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree or, if undertaking a Research Masters degree, not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters degree.
* Candidates are required to enrol in the University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University.

The Bachelor of Accounting is a co-operative education program, being a three-way partnership between the sponsor organisations, UTS and the students.
All students in the Bachelor of Accounting program receive a generous income tax-exempt scholarship per year for 3 years (subject to Recruitment Incentive being paid out), paid in fortnightly instalments.

Scholarship payments are:
*$13 500 for the first year of the course; $14 000.00 for the second year of the course $ 7 250.00 for the first half of the third year of the course

Recruitment Incentive $ 7 250.00 for the second half of the third year of the course if applicable.. In addition, all students who are recruited by a sponsor organisation in their final year of study will receive a Recruitment Incentive bonus, and any student who has to move home in order to join the course in Sydney will receive a Relocation Allowance.

The Bachelor of Accounting is only open to Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia.
We welcome applications from recent school leavers all over Australia – the course is not just for Sydney students.

Entry to the Bachelor of Accounting is very competitive and is not based on UAI score alone.

Job Description: Canon Collins Trust will award postgraduate scholarships to study in South Africa for southern African students in 2011. DO NOT use this form to apply to study in the UK or for the Graça Machel scheme

Postgraduate Study: All scholarships are for postgraduate study for one academic year. Renewal of scholarships will be considered for subsequent years of study (provided that students meet reporting requirements and receive satisfactory academic reports) up to a maximum of one year for Honours, two years for Masters and three years for PhD. Canon Collins Trust scholarships are not full scholarships and the value can vary from R10,000 to R35,000 a year dependent on need, level and available funds. The only full scholarships that the Trust offers for study in South Africa are for women of rural origin under the Graça Machel scholarship scheme. This must be applied for separately on a different form.

The African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) are pleased to announce the third Call of the ADDRF awards. The fellowship program awards dissertation fellowships to African doctoral students enrolled in sub-Saharan Africa universities who are conducting health-systems or sexuality related research.

By providing financial and research support, the program aims at encouraging doctoral students to pursue their training in the region, and thus contribute to the quality of university education in sub-Saharan Africa.

Specifically, this project aims to:

Shorten the amount of time it takes to complete doctoral studies
Strengthen the quality of these dissertations and the candidates

Eligibility

The African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowships are awarded to advanced doctoral students who are within two years of completing their doctoral thesis at an African university. The fellowships target individuals whose research show great promise of making substantive contribution to strengthening health systems or show great promise of enhancing the understanding of governance, equity, health or population-related issues in Africa. The purpose of the programme
One important task of the Nordic Africa Institute is to establish and maintain relations with African research communities. This is inter alia carried out through a Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme, the aim of which is to provide opportunities for its participants to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and promoting scholarly exchange with Nordic research communities.

Who can apply ?
The Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is directed at senior scholars in Africa engaged in research on/about the African continent with a proven track record of extensive post-graduate research experiences. We would especially like to encourage women to apply for these scholarships.

Applications are invited from scholars preferably with research projects related to the following current research clusters at the Institute :

Agrarian Change, Property and Resources
Conflict, Displacement and Transformation
Globalization, Trade and Regional Integration
Urban Dynamics

Grants and facilities

The Guest Researcher’s scholarship includes a return air-fare (Economy Class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of SEK (Swedish kronor) 300 (approx. USD 40) a day plus an installation grant of SEK 2,500 (approx. USD 350), a shared office and free photocopying facilities up to a maximum of 1,000 copies. Guest Researchers have access to a computer/MS Word at the office and have to do their own typing.

The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days. To be entitled to the travel costs, the Guest Researcher has to stay for at least two months.

Please note that most academic institutions in the Nordic countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute, are closed or at least running at a reduced capacity during the periods 15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January. Applicants are thus asked to avoid these periods.

The Institute’s library is specialized in literature on contemporary Africa. Guest researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Expected commitments

As a part of the exchange between the Guest Researchers and the Nordic institutions, each Guest Researcher is expected to make a lecture tour to at least one other Nordic country. Train or special fare air tickets and accommodation will be provided for this trip.

Sometimes, the Institute also invites the Guest Researcher to write a short article for its website. In addition the Guest Researcher is invited to produce a discussion paper to be published within the Institute’s publications’ series. The draft of the discussion paper should be presented preferably in a public forum prior to the end of the stay in Uppsala.

The Poverty Alleviation and Development (P&D) Scholarship for the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development will be awarded to an early– to mid-career development planner committed to poverty alleviation and community development within the region of Southern Africa.

Africa ERSA Scholarship Programme 2010

ERSA POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS (2010)- Economic Research Southern Africa

ERSA is funding post-graduate scholarships for masters or doctoral study in economics in 2009.

Each scholarship will be worth R80 000 per annum, with funding awarded to full time students for:
• 1 year of a one-year coursework masters program (with a mini-dissertation); or
• 2 years for masters by thesis or masters programmes that have two years of coursework and dissertation; or
• up to 3 years for PhD programmes.

In the case of multiple years of funding, funding will be conditional on reports of adequate academic progress being achieved, verified by the host university.

Eligibility for scholarships will be determined as follows:
• ERSA seeks to build long-term excellence in research and policy analysis in the field of economics. Academic excellence in economics is therefore a necessary criterion for eligibility. Applicants must provide a convincing demonstration of the ability to succeed in a credible postgraduate programme in economics.
• A minimum requirement is a pass at 70% in the degree preceding that for which the scholarship application is being submitted.
• Students from designated groups will receive prioritisation.
• Only South African citizens are eligible to apply.
• ERSA will prioritise facilitating the completion of PhD programmes in economics.

Key procedural considerations are as follows:
• Applicants will be subject to a short-listing process. Finalists for the scholarships may be invited for an interview for final selection.
• Scholarships can be utilised at the institution of choice of the scholarship winner. They will not be bound to the institution of origin of the student.
• Funding will only commence with written proof of acceptance to the relevant programme at the institution of choice.

• Selection of scholarship holders will be through a panel of economists identified and appointed by the ERSA Academic Board.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Political Thought

A National Research Foundation (NRF) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is on offer for one year (renewable for another) in the Department of Politics, University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. It will be under the mentorship of Professor Lawrence Hamilton, who holds an NRF President’s Award, and will be located within the Department and within the Centre of Political Thought at UJ. The fellowship can be taken up from 1 February or 1 July 2010, and is set at the UJ’s rate for postdoctoral fellowships, currently R160 000 per annum, sufficient to cover living expenses.

The Centre of Political Thought at UJ is a unique environment in South Africa for research in political thought and theory. Existing members of the Centre research on a variety of topics within the history of political thought and political philosophy, including human needs and rights; political judgement; freedom, constitutionalism, poverty and public debt in South Africa; German Idealist political thought; language and politics; 10th century Islamic political thought; the intellectual history of freedom in America; African political thought; and the thought of Rousseau, Sieyès and Marx.

Applicants should not feel, however, that they have to restrict their research proposals to these or cognate areas. The proposed postdoctoral research can be on any topic within the fields of history of political thought, political philosophy or political theory – including research that makes use of empirical analysis and case studies to further the understanding or applicability of a question within political theory. The final choice of candidate will not be influenced by their choice of research topic.

Candidates are only eligible if they have been awarded a doctoral degree within the last five years; and, if they have yet to receive the degree, they must have it in hand by the time they take up the position, or preferably by the end of 2009.

UNESCO-Japan Research Fellowships Programme 2010- For Developing Countries Students

NESCO/Keizo Obuchi (Japan) Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships Programme: 2010 Cycle – With a view to keeping alive and honouring the spirit of former Prime Minister Obuchi and his belief in “people building the next era”, 20 fellowships per year, for the ninth year, will be awarded to deserving candidates from UNESCO developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in the areas of development to which former Prime Minister Obuchi was committed and which coincide with areas of particular interest to UNESCO.

A. INTRODUCTION
Mr Keizo Obuchi, former Prime Minister of Japan, passed away on 14 May 2000 at the age of 62. Soft-spoken and charismatic, he was known as a man of integrity, honesty and modesty. He built a reputation as an exemplary official and was a particularly adept negotiator. A member of Japan’s Diet (Parliament) for over thirty years, he served as Japan’s Foreign Minister in 1997 until he was elected Prime Minister in July 1998. Mr Obuchi was known in the international arena for his commitment to development issues and his resolve to put Japan at the forefront of countries involved in consolidating the efforts of the international community to further progress in the social and economic development of humankind.

B. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi: 1. Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); 2. Intercultural Dialogue; 3. Information and Communication Technologies; and 4. Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.

C. ELIGIBILITY

Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:

1. Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.

2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.

3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1970 will not be considered under the Programme.

4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.

5. Priority attention will be given to:

* Women
* Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs)
* Palestinian researchers

6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.

7. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

D. CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION

It should be understood that upon termination of the Fellowship, the beneficiary must agree to return to his/her home country so that knowledge acquired may be put to good use in local research and training programmes.
