Challenging PhD projects Available in the Netherlands

Three PhD Positions in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry/Homogeneous Catalysis at the van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Applications are welcomed for 3 PhD positions in the group of Supramolecular & Homogeneous Catalysis, led by Professor Dr. Joost Reek. Overarching themes of the projects are: i) bifunctional activation of biorenewables as a green concept in homogeneous catalysis, ii) new, adaptive ligand systems for the hydroamination of alkenes and related activation processes and iii) bioinspired, photocatalytic production of H2 using NiFe-hydrogenase active site models. The projects will initially entail (in)organic synthesis and coordination chemistry while gradually homogeneous catalysis and e.g. spectroscopic investigations will also become important aspects. The research group is relatively young, ambitious and well-known for new concepts and approaches in (supramolecular) homogeneous catalysis. Lab-facilities are of excellent modern standards. The successful, eager applicants (M/F) should have excellent qualifying degrees in Chemistry with significant experience in synthetic (in)organic chemistry and interest in high-level research in a friendly, competitive environment. Due to grant restrictions, only residents of american and EU countries and associated states are eligible. Other students are strongly discouraged to apply. Good knowledge of English is required. The University of Amsterdam offers a 4-year PhD program, with an initial appointment for 1.5 years. Starting dates are flexible; positions are open from present till filled. Please send applications to Dr. J.I. van der Vlugt by e-mail (j.i.vandervlugt@uva.nl), including cover letter, CV, two recommendation letters and research interests.
