Investigations on the stability of joining technologies in the nm range
Description : For the interferential measurement of gauge blocks at the PTB, high precision phase shifting interferometers are used. One of the interferometers is enclosed in a vacuum chamber which can be temperature-controlled and filled with different gases. It could be shown that the instruments allow for a very precise measurement of thermal dilatation and ageing properties of high-tech materials down to the sub-nm range. These interferometers can measure the distance between two nearly parallel reflecting surfaces. Therefore it is also possible to measure the stability of samples where a small parallel plate is joined with different techniques on a larger base plate. For a better understanding of the joining technology used in precision engineering, different techniques like glueing and compression couplings shall be further investigated in the PhD work under different environmental conditions at the nm uncertainty level. Based on these results, optimisations of parameters influencing the stability, like glue types, geometrical form and size of the connection area or connection force, should be investigated. Furthermore, the measurement possibility of the phase shifting interferometer should be extended by clamping non-parallel samples between two parallel mirrors. Therefore, a clamping mechanism and a reproducible sample mount have to be designed and investigated. The entire program is run in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Skills in German are welcome.
