The ANU Sulawesi Nickel Baseline and Community Relations Project is seeking suitably qualified
applicants from UNTAD to take up Rio Tinto Scholarships at the ANU. The scholarships are for field-
based doctoral research projects that will contribute to a Social Baseline Study for Rio Tinto in Sulawesi.
Applicants will be enrolled as full-time PhD candidates with the Department of Anthropology in the
Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, which is situated within the ANU College of Asia and the
Pacific. The scholarship will be available for three years, and will carry a tax-exempt annual stipend of
AUD $21,000 per annum.
Essential Criteria:
? Applicants will have a social science background (e.g. Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science,
Agricultural Economics, Human Geography, History, Development Studies, Gender Studies),
preferably with a Master’s degree (S2).
? Admission to an ANU PhD program requires a degree at least equivalent to an Australian
Bachelor’s degree (S1) with a First Class Honours. Applicants must also meet language
requirements: a minimum score of 6.5 in an IELTS test, with no less than 6 in any particular band.
? Applicants must be prepared to carry out field research, with a minimum of 10 months in the field
in Morowali and/or Konawe districts in Central and Southeast Sulawesi, and to participate in the
Project’s activities.
Desirable Criteria:
? Successful applicants are expected to be present and enrolled at the ANU by no later than 15
February 2010.
Other Benefits:
? Full tuition fees, fieldwork support, travel to Canberra from Sulawesi, basic health insurance and departure
or establishment expenses. These benefits are for the scholar as the Project is not able to provide assistance
for dependents.

? Applicants should submit an expression of interest, together with a 500-word research proposal,
to the Project Leaders.
? For further information on areas of interest to the Project, and the suitability of potential research
themes, please contact the Project Leaders beforehand.
? Applicants of interest to the Project will be formally contacted and invited to submit a full research
proposal and application to study at the ANU.
