PhD position Gene profiling in adipose tissues in relation with obesity and the metabolic syndrome

PhD position Gene profiling in adipose tissues in relation with obesity and the metabolic syndrome

Description: We search a PhD student. A grant for two years is available and can be prolonged for another two years.
The research will be performed at the Atherosclerosis and Metabolism Unit in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.

Key words: gene expression, microRNA, obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis Programme: Emerging Concepts in Cardiovascular Medicine

Start date: 2009-09-15

Application date: 2009-09-12

Financing: available

Research group: Department of Cardiovascular Diseases, Atherosclerosis and Metabolism Unit

Remarks: We investigate the relation between gene profiles in adipose tissues with the development of the metabolic
syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis with special emphasis on mechanisms of oxidative stress and
inflammation. The project involves intervention studies with nutriceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Gene profiling
requires microarray and quantitative RT-PCR analysis of RNA and regulatory microRNA. Findings in mouse studies are
validated in humans and vice versa.
