Advances theories for functional oxides, PhD Position, The University of Vienna (Austria)

The University of Vienna (Austria) and the Center for Computational Materials Science (CMS, http://www.cms.tuwien.ac.at/) invites applications for a PhD studentship in Computational Materials Science.

The CMS in Vienna is a research center and graduate school based on a collaboration of research groups from the Faculties of Physics and Chemistry from the University of Vienna and the Technical University of Vienna. The activities of the CMS concentrate on the development of methods for multiscale simulations in condensed materials. The techniques being actively developed by the members of the CMS range from ab-initio density functional calculations (VASP, WIEN2k) to statistical-mechanical approaches for the description of liquids, amorphous materials and soft matter. The simulation tools developed by the members of the CMS are applies to a wide range of research projects: structural materials, magnetic materials, surfaces, interfaces, ultrathin films and nanomaterials, semiconductors and insulators, chemical reactions and catalysis, liquids and soft matter.

Within its Graduate school the CMS invites applications for a PhD studentships in Computational Materials Science to be led in the Vienna ab-initio Simulations Package (VASP) group. The VASP group, directed by J. Hafner and G. Kresse, is one of the world leading groups in computational material science. The VASP package is recognized as one of the most flexible and robust ab initio packages and is presently used by about 1000 academic institutions and industrial research centers. The PhD student will be part of a multidisciplinary research team within a collaborative EU-INDIA FP7-funded project involving other two European theoretical groups (Trinity College Dublin and University of Cagliari) and three Indian theoretical groups (S.N. Bose national Center for Basic Sciences Kolkata, Harish-Chandra Research Institute Allahabad, and Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research Bangalore). The overall aim of the project is the investigation, through a synergy of advanced First-Principles, density-functional based methods, and Model Hamiltonian calculations suited for strong correlated systems, of the properties and functionalities of transition metal oxides that may be viable candidates as building blocks of future micro- and nanoelectronic devices with enhanced capabilities. We are looking for outstanding candidates with a degree in physics, chemistry or materials science, a strong background in quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, mathematics and computing and a strong personal commitment to research. You will join a lively community performing frontline research.

Description : The Institute for Spatial Information and Measurement (I3mainz) at the University of Applied Sciences (Mainz, Germany) and its partner the Laboratory of Computer Science, Electronics and Imaging (Le2i – UMR 5158 CNRS) at the University of Bourgogne (Auxerre, France) are seeking applications from qualified individuals to fill an available Ph.D. position in the field of Computer Science commencing September, 2009. The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field and will be enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Bourgogne. The candidate’s work will be carried out in part at I3mainz in Germany and in part at the Le2i in France. His research will be within I3mainz’s WiDOP project which benefits from a three-year funding support (~ 27 000 EUR per year for this position) granted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany). WiDOP (Wissensbasierte Detektion von Objekten in Punktwolken für Anwendungen im Ingenieurbereich), which stands for “Knowledge-based detection of objects in 3D point clouds for engineering applications”, is an ambitious project aiming to devise and develop efficient intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing of terrestrial laser scanner data. This project contrasts with existing ones in that it uses prior knowledge as basis for a selective, object-oriented detection, identification and modeling of objects present in the point cloud. This knowledge can be obtained from various sources such as databases, construction plans, as-built plans or Geographic Information Systems. Within WiDOP, the successful candidate will work on knowledge-based numerical processing of 3D point clouds. The goal is to develop and implement intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing, detection, identification and modeling of objects from terrestrial laser scanner data. About the MyCare Project
The MyCare project is a joint initiative of the Computer Science Department of the University of Groningen and of the Department of Psychiatry of the Groningen University Medical Hospital. MyCare aims at building information technology tools to support patients with schizophrenia for personal recovery and risk assessment. The tools are tested with actual patients in a controlled environment. This exciting PhD project combines the creation of innovative software tools with actual medical field work.
The position is financed in the context of the Dutch ZonMW program for medical innovation. Another PhD student will be hired to work on the MyCare project in the field of Psychiatry.
The position is open in the Distributed Systems unit lead by Prof. Marco Aiello <http://www.cs.rug.nl/ds/> in close collaboration with the Intelligent Systems unit lead by Prof. Nicolai Petkov <http://www.cs.rug.nl/~petkov/>. Required profile

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers outstanding candidates a Ph.D. position. The position is for a period of four years which should result in the Ph.D. defense of the candidate. The salary starts from about 1500 euros per month in the first year and will be adjusted to general price movements once a year. After one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion of the Ph.D. thesis within the remaining three years. Managing Complex Cloud Systems

Cloud computing is a novel paradigm where services and resources availability scales dynamically on demand. Due to reduced maintenance costs, more and more software solutions are provided as services within cloud systems, and first adoption of cloud concepts is proving successful, e.g., Google App Engine or Amazon S3. Still, there is a lot of space for improvement. For example, consider complex software systems, with sophisticated user interfaces, possibly built on top of legacy systems. And one notices that cloud computing does not provide necessary support. This is even more evident if we consider applications within highly dynamic environments with changing requirements on-the-fly, unpredictable failures, with limited or no control over execution. This is especially important in the domains where maintaining single version of the software system satisfying all potential customers is either unfeasible or cost-ineffective. One of the possible solutions is to apply intentional aspects to the development and deployment of services in the cloud. Intentions represent goals and expectations of different parties involved in the cloud: software providers, customers, cloud infrastructure vendors, etc. Intentions are inherently declarative, leaving a complete freedom for the execution environment to decide how to execute the program, and how to achieve (or not to violate) given declarative definitions. Having intentions attached to individual services (in form of service level agreements), to software systems, to cloud infrastructure would result in better cloud solutions, giving more control to individual participants yet maintaining traditional cloud computing benefits. We offer a PhD position in the area of service oriented architecture considering one or more of the following topics: Cloud computing infrastructure, Software as a service scenarios, Automatic composition of services, Domain-specific languages for cloud systems.

Peer to Peer Architectures for the Power Grid

The Energy sector is undergoing a radical transformation. The traditional distinction between producer and consumer is slowly disappearing. In fact, energy production by such diverse means as photovoltaic panels, cogeneration, or wind power is easily within reach of average households that are currently being equipped with smart meters (energy measuring devices with computational and communication capabilities). These new technologies strengthen the vision of the future energy market, where any node of the power grid will buy, produce and sell energy to any other node in an open, peer-to-peer, democratic market. In this future scenario, energy exchange is more efficient, has higher availability guarantees and is cheaper. To accomplish the exciting vision of a democratic energy market, we propose to investigate two crucial scientific and technological aspects. On the one hand, we shall perform a complex network analysis to identify the topological and structural needs of the power grid. On the other hand, we shall design, test, and showcase an innovative software layer (middleware) for smart meters. These two research initiatives are geared towards understanding and designing the infrastructure of the future peer-to-peer democratic energy market. We propose a radical new view on power grid analysis and design by looking at the energy arena from a complex network/software point of view, rather than the traditional Electrical Engineering perspective. The research is strengthen by the collaboration with the energy companies active in the Netherlands.

We are offering a PhD position in accordance to this vision in one or more of the following areas: Complex network analysis of Power Grids, Simulation, Diagnostics and Diagnosability of failures, Peer-to-Peer architectures, Pervasive computing.

PhD position in computational biomechancis
Location: Biomedical Engineering Research Unit, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Liège, Belgium Description: A new biomedical engineering research unit was recently established within the mechanical engineering department of ULg to support the running master program of biomedical engineering.

A graduate assistantship is available for 2 years (twice renewable). Research will be carried out in the area of computational modeling of tissue engineering and bone fracture healing (including the influence of mechanical loading and the modeling of blood vessels).

The ideal candidate has a strong interest in biomedical processes and an affinity for computer modeling. The candidate should be an eager self-starter who is able to work with, and be part of, a multidisciplinary (biomechanics and systems biology) research team. The candidate is expected to collaborate in the organization of the courses and practica according to her/his skills and the need of the department (about 120 h/year).

Requirements:

The candidate should have a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent and has distinguished her/himself during or after these studies. The candidate should also be competent in written and spoken English. Knowledge of French is not required, although foreign PhD students are strongly encouraged to learn French. Salary: 1800 euro/month with tax exemption.

PhD Scholarship in Computer Science

The Department of Communication, Business and Information Technologies (CBIT) at Roskilde University invites applications for a PhD scholarship in Computer Science to be filled by 1 September 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The scholarship is two-thirds funded by Roskilde University and one-third by a grant from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (www.fi.dk) to the FIRST Graduate School (Foundations of Research in Software Technologies) (www.first.dk) of which Roskilde University is a member. The topics of the PhD are expected to fall within the overall themes of the FIRST, in particular modeling, analysis, and verification of computer systems. Topics focusing on both theory and practice are welcome.

The successful applicant will be attached to the Programming, Logic and Intelligent Systems (PLIS) research group (plis.ruc.dk), whose research areas include knowledge-based systems and intelligent interaction with systems, logic and knowledge representation, programming languages and tools. Research in Computer Science at Roskilde University is also carried out in the User-driven IT Innovation (UDI) research group, covering information systems and human-computer interaction, focusing on how organizations manage, design, implement, and use IT to support users’ needs and business strategies.

Roskilde University (RUC) is situated just east of Roskilde, 25 minutes by train from Copenhagen Central Station, on a campus with all facilities within a few minutes’ walking distance. PhD students in Computer Science are affiliated with the PhD program DMIT (Design and Management of Information Technology) PhD programme within the CBIT PhD School, and also with the FIRST Graduate School.

Applicants are expected to hold a Masters degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applications should include documentation of their studies demonstrating their aptitude for research. Information on the Masters dissertation or equivalent is especially relevant in this regard.

Applications in triplicate (3 copies) must include curriculum vitae, documentation of previous studies and an outline PhD proposal. Should the evaluation committee ask for further material to be included in the evaluation, the applicant is responsible for forwarding such material.
