PhD Position: Novel Antifouling Coatings Based on Enzymes, Technical University of Denmark.

Joint Ph.D. project between The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (www.kt.dtu.dk) and Hempel A/S (www.Hempel.com).

Background and aim:
Growth of marine organisms on the hull of ships (fouling) is a major problem resulting in increased fuel consumption, reduced speed and increased docking times and maintenance cost. The fouling is usually controlled by painting the underwater parts of ships with antifouling coatings. The best performing solution for antifouling paint is based on TriButylTin, but has effectively been banned and replaced by other solutions. Most of the present, tin-free and solvent-based coating systems rely on the action of Cu2O and organic biocides. Although this is considered friendlier to the environment there is a need to develop better solutions. In this project we will attempt to develop new types of antifouling coatings based on enzymes.

Project contents
The project will consist of:

  • Literature survey on antifouling coatings and enzymatic possibilities.
  • Laboratory testing of enzymatic solutions.
  • Design and formulation of novel antifouling coatings.
  • Test and evaluation of novel solutions.
  • Explaining the underlying physical and chemical mechanisms of the new systems.
  • Full-scale testing.

During the project there will be close co-operation with coating producer Hempel A/S, in particular the Spanish R&D center.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering and top grades.

PhD scholarship in Political Science, Department of Political Science, University of Southern, Denmark

PhD Position:Determinants of political beliefs, Denmark

Job Description: At the Department of Political Science and Public Management, five PhD scholarships within the programme “Beliefs in Politics: Actors and Determinants (Elites, Frames, and Personalities)” are available for appointment for a period of three years as of October 1, 2010 or as soon as possible hereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period, and at least two of the three years, the workplace will be in Odense, Denmark. Upon approval by the advisor and the programme director up to one year can be spent at a foreign university. The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

We look for candidates with a Master Degree in political science, political psychology or political communication (or a related field) who have distinguished themselves at the MA level and, preferably, have written a Master thesis about social, institutional, psychological and contextual determinants of political beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. We prefer applicants whose strengths lie within methods, quantitative and/or qualitative. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.

The PhD scholarships are funded by the Danish government as “mobility scholarships” which means that candidates from the University of Southern Denmark are not eligible to apply.

The application must include a detailed description of the PhD project. In addition to a general problem formulation, it should discuss relevant theory, propositions/hypotheses, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description cannot exceed 7 pages. In addition to the full project description, a summary of no more than 250 words must be included.

The project must relate to the general theme of the programme. We are interested in the formation of political beliefs at both the elite and the mass level, and we particularly welcome projects that explicitly integrate insights from political science, (political) psychology, communication theory, and genetics/biology. In spite of the cross-disciplinary ambitions of the programme, the project must be relevant to political science. When we select PhD students for the programme, we are eager to cover the following broad sub-themes:

• The institutional, organizational, political and psychological determinants of elite communication and framing strategies (elites include politicians, experts, journalists, etc.).
• The influence of elite information, communication and framing strategies on the attitudes and behaviour of other elite groups.
• The effect of (a) elite communication and framing strategies and (b) quality of information on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour.
• The influence of individual level variables, in particular personality traits and genetic factors on mass opinion, attitudes, and behaviour. The research programme has just finished a survey among Danish twins on political attitudes and behaviour, and a representative survey on personality traits and political attitudes and behaviour. PhD students will have access to these data sources.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad for a semester or more. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. All activities are fully funded by the research programme. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the Department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the Department.

A PhD scholarship is available at the Environmental Stress Research Group, Institute of Biology, University of Southern Denmark.
Job Description The project will focus on identification, expression and functional dynamics of aquaporins in osmoregulatory epithelia in fish. The scholarship is an integrated part of the project “Molecular and cellular aspects of ion and water transport across osmoregulatory epithelia in fish” granted by the Danish Council for Independent Research | Natural Sciences.

The successful student should have a good theoretical and experimental background in zoophysiology and molecular biology/biochemistry. The project involves periods of field work combined with laboratory experiments. The student is expected to collaborate with other PhD students, post docs and senior scientists working on related projects.

PhD fellowship: Study of microorganisms in marine environments using molecular ecology tools in combination with biogeochemical analysis, University of Southern Denmark

Job Description: Research will be on microorganisms living in marine water and sediments and it includes several field trips to marine environments around the world. We focus on microorganisms within the sulphur and methane cycle and combine microbial activity and molecular ecology with biogeochemistry and stable isotope analysis. Job description:Impact of environmental stress on nitric oxide homeostasis, respiration and gill ion transport mechanisms in fish.
Research on the influence of environmental stress (hypoxia, salinity change and other challenging conditions) on physiological mechanisms involves studies at organism, cellular and molecular levels. The investigation employs a variety of techniques, including chemiluminescence detection of nitric oxide metabolites, PCR and immunohistochemistry. The successful applicant should have a background or an interest in the field and some experience with relevant techniques.

Post doc in Environmental and Maritime Transport Economics, Denmark

Job Description: Traditionally the externalities of transport have been well researched and described for land based transport like road and rail. This is however not the case for maritime transport. As the major externalities of maritime transport are contribution to pollution and global warming the Department of Environmental and Business Economics would like enhance its research into the field of sustainable maritime transport by economic valuation of shipping externalities.

Besides this research area, the Post doc will also be involved in the Departments ongoing and future projects in environmental and transport economics whereas teaching obligations will be limited.

PhD Fellowship: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union, Denmark

PhD Fellowship at the Department of Border Region Studies,Syddansk University

Job Description: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions

The Department of Border Region Studies, at Campus Sønderborg, invites applications for a PhD Fellowship to be filled by November 1, 2010 and for a period of three years.

The Department of Border Region Studies (IFG) is rooted in the unique history of the Southern Danish border region. At the same time, the department has a close relationship with the business community and the cultural institutions of the region. The comparative aspect including other (border) regions in Europe is particularly strong within the regional studies and within the border region studies. Due to a strong focus on comparative aspects the department has developed a broad international research network within Europe. In addition, the department has a special obligation to carrying out research relating to the German minority in Southern Jutland.

The fellowship is part of the research project: The deconstruction of borders and unfamiliarity in the European Union: An analysis of historical representations of otherness and contemporary practices in border regions.

Five European universities cooperate in this project which is funded by the European Science Foundation.

Under the umbrella of the overall programme, the aim of the fellowship is to analyse the interplay of labour market mobility and processes of familiarity and unfamiliarity as explanatory factors of levels in regional cohesion. A Long Durée case study is to be conducted on labour mobility in the Danish-German border region for the period spanning from the first half of the 19th century to the present day. As Danish-German border region we define roughly the territory of the former Duchy of Schleswig. The Duchy of Schleswig is challenging from a research perspective as its status has changed several times during the stipulated period. The composition of national majorities and minorities interchanges as well. Thereby the case illustrates the changing role of region, identity and state in processes of re- and de-bordering. The Long Durée perspective is used to illustrate the political, social and cultural expressions of cohesion at a small geographical scale and the importance of different, competing concepts of regions and regionalisms over time.

Candidates should hold a university degree in history or related disciplines as ethnology, anthropology or cultural studies. The master thesis should be graded at least with B according to the ECTS scale. Advanced knowledge of English is required in addition to mastering Danish and German at least at reading level. Experience with archival studies will be considered an advantage. The application must include a project proposal description of max 8 pages. The project description must include a clear research problem, which falls within the theme of the project and focuses on the Danish-German border region. It should also include a discussion of relevant theory and scholarly literature on border regions, as well as methods and data planned to be used.

PhD Scholarships in Organic Chemistry, Denmark

Two PhD positions are available in organometallic chemistry and catalysis at DTU Chemistry.

Project description:
The purpose of the first project is to study the dehydrogenation and decarbonylation of alcohols and polyalcohols with transition metal catalysts. The project is part of a larger strategic research project funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research where the aim is to develop new methods for converting biomass into fuels and energy.

The purpose of the second project is to study new aspects of the Grignard addition reaction as well as the dehydrogenative coupling between alcohols and amines. The project is funded by the Torkil Holm Foundation and DTU Chemistry.

Applicants should indicate if one of the two positions is preferred. Both positions will be available from 1 October 2010 or soon thereafter.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master’s degree, but cannot begin the PhD studies before the master’s degree has been received.

PhD Position in Prediction of Bacterial Pathogenicity, Denmark

PhD Position in Prediction of Bacterial Pathogenicity, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark

A PhD position is available at the newly established Center for Genomic Epidemiology (CGE) at Center for Biological Sequence Analysis, DTU Systems Biology.

Within a few years, the price for whole-genome sequencing of bacterial genomes will have become so low that it is no longer a limiting factor. Rather, the challenges will lay in how to assemble, process and handle the large amount of data in a standardized way that will make the information useful for diagnosis, outbreak investigation, source tracing and surveillance. It is the aim of CGE to provide the bioinformatics and scientific foundation for future web-based solutions, including developing tools for extraction of biologically and epidemiologically relevant information from the sequence data. It is a key objective of the PhD project to develop methods for predicting, based on the sequence data, an organism’s potential as a pathogen or a non-pathogen. Initial focus will be on well characterized pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus, but later the developed procedures should be expanded to other organisms.

Qualifications:

  • MSc degree in bioinformatics or in life science (e.g. microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical engineering) combined with documented experience within bioinformatics.
  • Excellent programming skills. Experience in Perl or Python or a similar programming language.
  • Familiar with working on UNIX platforms.
  • Able to work independently and to plan and carry out complicated tasks, while also being part of a large and dynamic group.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • Interest in microbiology and global disease control.

PhD Studentship and Postdoctoral Position in Technical University of Denmark

Job Description: You will design neutron scattering instruments for ESS using the tools developed in the McStas simulation package. This work will be carried out in collaboration with instrument experts located both in Lund and around the world. For the judgement of the instrument performance, you will perform virtual experiments on samples typical for the particular instrument. In this connection, you will take part in the development of the tools and algorithms to correctly describe neutron scattering samples.

Qualifications
You must have a suitable university degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D., respectively) within Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or equivalent. You should have good computing skills, have a good sense of data quality, and be able to work within a team. Furthermore, you should have a good understanding of modeling of physical properties. Specific experience within X-ray and neutron scattering is considered an advantage, but is not required.

Terms of employment
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students or post docs. The Ph.D. position(s) is a fixed-term 3 year employment. The post doc position(s) will be a 2-year contract with a possibility for extension, given sufficient funds.

Job description
The successful candidate will join the medical/industrial dosimetry group and is expected to perform research in high dose dosimetry aimed at developing dosimetry methods for industrial applications of radiation. The candidate will also participate in supervision of PhD or Master Students.

In addition, the candidate will be involved in customer-oriented activities within the scope of the accredited Risø High Dose Reference Laboratory (HDRL), e.g. validation of low-energy electron accelerators. Risø HDRL services the radiation processing industry in Denmark and abroad, and in particular the medical device industry that sterilizes products using radiation.

Qualifications
The candidate should have a PhD in Physics/Chemistry or similar with a background in radiation physics. Candidates for a Senior Researcher position must further have experience at least as Assistant Professor/Researcher/Postdoc or similar qualifications.

Job Description: The scholarships are supported by several research grants (MIRESOWA, DW Biofilter, Ecodesign MBR) with the objective to develop and optimize biotechnological solutions for drinking water and wastewater handling.

The drinking water projects have a specific emphasis on analyzing and optimizing biological rapid sand filtration technologies for both bulk and trace pollutant removal. The wastewater project has a specific emphasis on analyzing and optimizing autotrophic N removal in membrane-bioreactors. The successful candidates will be employed at DTU Environment within the framework of the Urban Water Technology graduate school (www.urbanwatertech.dk), and work under the supervision of the PIs and post-doctoral associates. Two Ph.D. Fellowships for International Students in Molecular Microbial Ecology, Denmark

Job Description: The molecular microbial ecology group aims to recruit two highly qualified PhD candidates to conduct research and training in microbiology and biotechnology. More specifically, applications will be considered for two research programs:

1) Microbial Metagenomics and Metatranscriptomics
The aim of this project is to further develop and improve the modern microbial metagenomics tools to uncover a range of novel enzymatic activities in a natural environment. In this project we will use high throughput sequencing to explore the bacterial biodiversity and composition in various natural environments to a hitherto unseen level.

2) Survival and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria
The aim of this project is to establish a fundamental understanding of survival and proliferation of pathogenic bacteria in the childcare institutional environment. Formation of bacterial coatings on surfaces known as biofilms, may create micro-environments where bacteria can survive and possibly multiply in the external environment. Biofilms have also been shown to protect bacteria against disinfectants. A basic understanding of the overall incidence of bacteria and their lifestyles in institutional environments is therefore an indispensable prerequisite for successfully combating infection in institutional childcare.

The fellowships are open to both Danish and international applicants. We expect that applicants have obtained an MSc degree in biology or biochemistry, a good grasp of theoretical concepts, and some expertise in laboratory techniques used in molecular microbial ecology, DNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Fluency in English is a requirement.

An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the supervisors, Søren Sørensen and Anders Priemé and by Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 300.174 per year (April 2010 level) plus pension contribution and the possibility to negotiate wage. We are looking for talented candidates for an international-level PhD degree in computational evolution of metal proteins at The Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
This new, international research project with collaborators at Stanford University involves the study of iron-containing proteins: Why did they evolve to their particular current structures, and how are these structures evolutionary optimized for protein functions?
Mapping the evolved structure-function principles of metalloproteins has far-reaching consequences, because metals are of such importance in all of biochemistry. Ultimately, the knowledge gained from computer simulations will be used to develop new tailored metal sites, cleaner and more effective catalysts for use in industry (green chemistry), and for the design of new, improved medicine. These research areas are very active and of growing future importance, because of the need to process increasingly complex information. The techniques play a dominant role in rational molecular design and will continue to grow in importance, both within academic research and within the private sector.
QualificationsCandidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. Skills within several of the following areas are relevant: Physical chemistry, computational biology / chemistry, mathematical modeling, bioinorganic chemistry, biophysics, quantum chemistry, computers/programming.

PhD Fellowship in Regional Economics at the Department of Border Region Studies, Denmark

The fellowship is part of the development plan for the new group in Regional Economics. A postdoc position is open in the newly started Nilsson Group at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. Research in the group focuses on understanding how the spindle assembly checkpoint controls progression through mitosis and how this is deregulated in cancer cells.

The project aims at elucidating the role of the essential cell cycle regulator Cdc20 in promoting aneuploidy and chromosome instability in cancer cells. A range of techniques including culturing of cancer cell lines and time-lapse microscopy will be employed in the project.

Strong candidates with a PhD in Life Sciences are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should have strong experience in molecular and cellular biology. Previous experience in culturing different mammalian cell lines will be an advantage. Excellent technical skills and the capacity for productive self-directed research is a prerequisite.
