Research Scientist and Lecturer Position in Theoretical Astrophysics

The Zentrum für Astronomie und Astrophysik (ZAA) at the Technische Universität Berlin (TUB) invites applications for the position of a Research Scientist and Lecturer in the group of Plasma and High energy Astrophysics. The successful candidate should have a thorough knowledge in theory and modeling in one or several of the following fields: the acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays, extragalactic systems (e.g. groups and clusters of galaxies, interacting galaxies).

Preference will be given to a highly motivated scientist who will join the group’s effort in modeling galaxies and its constitutents in different environments, both in the local and distant universe.

The position includes 4 hours of teaching per week during semester, and the applicant is expected to guide students at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD). Experience in research fund raising would be appreciated. The applicant should hold a PhD in astronomy, physics or mathematics. Further qualification within the university system (Habilitation) will be supported.

The contract is for 5 years, and the salary is commensurate with the university scheme (BAT IIa), and social benefits, health insurance etc., are according to the regulations of the public sector in Germany. Preferred starting date is the winter term (October 2009).

The Technische Universität Berlin is the largest University of Technology in Germany, and situated in the heart of Berlin, in the historic quarter of Charlottenburg, close to the city center. The Jena Graduate School, funded by the Federal Programme “ProExzellenz” of the free State of Thuringia, is supported by the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, the School of Economics and Business Administration, and the Max Planck Institute of Economics. The common research approach within the GSBC is interdisciplinary oriented and addresses the analyses of human behaviour with respect to social and conomic change.

We are particularly interested in the analysis of individual as well as collective behaviour and decisions that lead to change, or adapt and even resist to change at the level of individuals, groups, industries, regions and countries. Our major concerns are the dynamics of these behaviours and/or decisions and their interrelatedness, as well as the underlying, often feedback driven, mechanisms of change. We investigate these phenomena from different disciplinary angles, which taken together provide a better understanding of social and economic change. Methods include analytical models, controlled experiments, empirical and field studies and historical investigations.

From applicants we expect a sustained research interest in one of the following four
interdisciplinary research areas:

  • Responses to accelerated change

  • Changing social and economic contexts and changing identities

Postdoctoral position in Ceramics Science: Mechanical properties of FAST sintered oxide ceramics

Description : A position is available at the Materials Science Department of the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a young research team focusing on the development of new ceramic processes in a dynamic and international environment. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) or FAST (Field Assisted Sintering Technique) is a relatively new technique which enables rapid densification under direct current heating conditions and mechanical pressure. In order to understand the mechanisms involved a direct comparison with hot pressing was done in our group. Densification mechanisms were identified for electrically insulating and conductive oxide powders. The present project aims at optimizing the processing of nanocrystalline oxides by evaluating the mechanical properties of FAST specimens as a function of grain size (hardness, fracture strength and toughness, as well as residual stresses due to high heating and cooling rates by neutron diffraction). -Ideal candidates have a good background both in materials science and mechanics. -High motivation, ability to work in team but also autonomy, curiosity, good experimental skills as well as interest in theoretical approaches are expected. -Fluency in English is required, knowledge of German is appreciated. -Salary is funded by the German Research Organization (DFG) for a duration of 2 years (Bat IIa). -Envisioned start time: flexible (Fall 2009) Technische Universität Darmstadt specifically encourages female candidates to apply with a view towards increasing the proportion of female scientists. Role of Extracellular Matrix and of Environmental Particle Deposition During Lung Development and Aging

The focus of the lab is on the influence of the extracellular matrix components tenascin-C, alpha8-integrin and discoidin receptor 1 and 2, as well as of (environmental) particle deposition on lung development and lung aging.

The current project includes molecular biology, stereology and “synchrotron radiation based X-ray tomographic imaging”. Various aspects of the development and aging of the lung will be studied. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The position is available immediately.

Candidates with expertise and/or interest in cell and molecular biology as well as in light and tomographic X-ray and electron microscopy are encouraged to apply.

Methoden:
Depending on the applicant a combination of molecular biology, cell biology, stereology, “synchrotron radiation based X-ray tomographic imaging”, and/or 3D-image analysis.

Two Years Postdoc Position, BMBF-BIODISC programme, Institute of Immunology, University of Heidelberg

The overall objective of the BMBF-funded international collaborative project (university and industrial partners) is to enhance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of tumor cell resistance to complement (e.g. by overexpression of membrane complement inhibitors). The project will focus on specific targeting potent siRNA to tumor cells in order to silence membrane complement regulators. This is expected to lead to sensitization of tumor cells to antibody-induced (e.g. Rituximab) complement attack and to opsonization that may also improve NK cell cytotoxicity.

The position is located at the interface between cell biology, immunology and lipid biochemistry. The applicants should have a strong background in immunology and cell and molecular biology. Knowledge of drug delivery systems (nanomedicine), a considerable background in cell culture techniques and general immunological, biochemical and molecular approaches is required. Experience in membrane and lipid biochemistry is especially welcome.

The position requires organizational qualifications and the ability to communicate effectively (in German and English) with internal and external collaborators.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with interests to work within an interdisciplinary team in this project of translational medicine.

We offer a work in a dedicated research team and state-of-the art equipment. The position is available immediately but may be started latest by October 1st.

Postdoctoral Position in Cancer Stem Cell and Apoptosis Research (Ulm)

The Children´s Hospital of the Ulm University Hospital is inviting applications for an enthusiastic, highly motivated Post-Doc in the field of cancer stem cells and apoptosis.

In our multidisciplinary and international research group (group leader: Prof. Simone Fulda), we study apoptosis signaling in cancers to identify key molecules for the development of new cancer therapeutics and novel prognostic biomarkers (e.g. see Nat Med, 2002, 8:808-15; Cancer Res, 2008, 68:7956-65; Blood, 2009, 113:1710-22).

The current project will focus on the elucidation of apoptosis pathways in cancer stem cells derived from malignant brain tumors using primary tumor samples, cancer stem cell lines and mouse tumor models.

The group studies the effects of nitric oxide donors on proliferation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis in malignant gliomas in vitro and in vivo.
The varied research activities include both cell culture, molecular and cell biology and immunohistochemical techniques as well as in vivo work using rodent glioma models.

The postdoc will be the group leader of a small, but expanding research group (currently 1 BTA, 2 doctoral candidates) and should etablish and expand new methods and interdisciplinary projects and collaborations. The Max-Planck-Institute for Physics invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position

to participate in a new effort on proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration.

The concept of proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration has recently been proposed as a means of accelerating a bunch of electrons to high energies with very high gradients. Initial calculations are promising, as shown in Nature Physics 5, 363 - 367 (2009), and a demonstration experiment is now under consideration. The successful candidate would help in producing a proposal for such an experimental demonstration. The focus of the work would be on developing characterization techniques for the plasma wakefields and for the drive and witness bunches. An experimental technique under consideration to extract time and space resolved information on electric fields is single-shot electro-optical sampling.

Formal requirement for this position is a PhD in experimental particle, plasma or accelerator physics. Previous experience in plasma wakefield experiments, terahertz physics and/or nonlinear optics are an advantage.

Salary and benefits are commensurate with public service organization (TVöD) rules. The contract is initially limited to 2 years with the possibility of an extension. Post Doc / Group Leader Position for Cognitive Computational Neuroscience

A postdoctoral / group leader position is available at the Technical University of Chemnitz (Germany) in the Department of Computer Science. The position is initially for three years, starting in October 2009 (or soon thereafter), but with a possibility of renewing.

The canditate should have a PhD and prior experience in developing neurocomputational systems, particularly with respect to data in the neurosciences and psychology. Experience in interdisciplinary projects or own experimental studies is welcome. A background in parallel computing or virtual reality is beneficial but not required.

The position requires teaching students in computer science in the area of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational neuroscience and image processing but the major focus is on research.
The envisaged research focus should be on the development of neurocomputational models closely linked to the neurosciences and/or the application of neurocomputational principles for cognitive systems in the area of object recognition, visual attention, visual masking, space perception, emotions, neural learning rules, cognitive control, decision making, reward-based learning (dopamine, basal ganglia), grasping, or eye movements. Additionally planned own experimental studies will be supported. It is expected that the candidate applies for research grants to expand the research group.

We offer excellent research support for the development of neurocomputational systems in form of research seminars, parallel computing hardware, virtual reality setups, and eye tracking. In addition, we have many contacts to multiple experimental groups in Germany and participate in various international collaborations.

The Cystic Fibrosis / Pulmonary Research Group at the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology & Allergy and Cystic Fibrosis Center, Department of Pediatrics III, University of Heidelberg is an interdisciplinary research group working on the molecular pathogenesis and novel therapeutic strategies for cystic fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases using animal models for human disease (Mall et al. Nat. Med. 2004 and Zhou et al. AJRCCM 2008).

We are seeking a highly motivated experienced scientist and good team player for a research project investigating the role of microRNAs in the pathogenesis and as potential therapeutic targets for chronic lung disease in mouse models. Responsibilities include supervision of graduate students and technicians. This project is funded by the DFG and is embedded within the attractive research environment of the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit (MMPU) of the University of Heidelberg and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Applications are invited for the position of a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the well-equipped Stem Cell Engineering Group at the Department of Reconstructive Neurobiology, University of Bonn. The research project focuses on cellular reprogramming and basic embryonic stem cell biology (Nolden et al., Nature Methods. 2006 Jun;3(6):461; Bosnali M, Edenhofer F., Biol Chem. 2008 Jul;389(7):851).

Research will involve the development of non-genetic technologies for cellular reprogramming of somatic cells to multi- or pluripotency and the analysis of molecular mechanisms underlying nuclear reprogramming at the molecular and cellular level. Novel non-genetic and biochemical technologies will be applied in order to functionally screen for factors that are involved in cellular reprogramming.

The successful applicant should have a PhD or MD/PhD with a strong background in cell biology. Previous experience in at least one of the following areas is essential: cultivation of pluripotent human or mouse ES cells; retro- or lentiviral transduction, recombinant protein expression.

Self-motivation, enthusiasm, and creativity is expected. She/he should be able to supervise a PhD student and and technician. You will benefit from working in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment encompassing a wide spectrum of modern stem cell biology.
