PhD student position in molecular immunology
at the Division of Rheumatology of the University of Munich available.
Applications are invited from graduates with a diploma (master degree or equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry or immunology to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the generation of regulatory T cells.
The project is funded by the „Förderprogramm für Forschung und Lehre (FöFoLe)“ at the University of Munich. Close interactions with projects within the graduate program „Oligonucleotides“, the center grant „Autoimmunity“ (SFB 571) and other projects within the FöFoLe are required throughout the work. The molecular biology laboratory of the Division of Rheumatology has been constructed in 2007 and allows the complete spectrum of all methods required in modern molecular immunology.
Experience in flow cytometry, cell culture and molecular biological and immunological techniques would be advantageous.

Post-Doc or PhD Position for Cognitive Computational Neuroscience
A Post-Doc or PhD position is available at the Technical University of Chemnitz in the Department of Computer Science. The position is for three years, starting immediately.
The research position is part of the research network “Neuro-cognitive mechanisms of conscious and unconscious visual perception” (http://www.uniulm.de/unbewusst/index.htm).
The goal in our project is to elucidate the role of reentrant processing for visual masking and stimulus encoding. Subliminal perception is typically investigated using masked stimuli. Previous priming experiments of the partners in the network have demonstrated various effects of subliminal perception that altogether suggest unconscious stimulus processing to a significant degree, even when stimuli are masked. In previous computational work we have established a framework of attentive visual perception by means of reentrant processing (Hamker, 2005; Hamker, 2007), which has been used as a theoretical basis for the design of experimental studies of the partner groups in the network. We intend to extend this framework to include mechanisms of visual masking with a particular focus on reentrant processing based on previous work of learning receptive fields (Wiltschut & Hamker, 2009). This computational work complements the experimental studies of the Haynes, Ansorge and Mattler groups and also relates to the work of other partner projects. We will provide a description of the neural stimulus trace of masked stimuli that will be important for the interpretation of the experimental results obtained in other groups of the network.

The canditate should have prior experience in developing neurocomputational systems, particularly with respect to data in the neurosciences and psychology. Experience in interdisciplinary projects or own experimental studies is welcome. Good programming experience is essential.

A PhD position (BAT IIa/E 13 (50%) ~ 1100 ¤) is available within the research group of PD Dr. H. Martin Schaefer at the University of Freiburg. The project will focus on the contemporary evolution of reproductive isolation among blackcap populations (Sylvia atricapilla) that differ in migratory orientation. The project will investigate the rapid evolution of isolating barriers in sympatry, hybrid-speciation and compare different models that analyse speciation with ongoing gene flow. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Dr. Segelbacher, Department of wildlife ecology, University of Freiburg. Field work will take place in southern Germany (for more information, see

To study genetic and ecomorphological adaptations the Ph.D. candidate will capture blackcaps upon spring arrival on the breeding grounds and before departure in autumn at different sites in southern Germany. The PhD project includes independent field work, genetic analyses in the lab (nuclear markers and candidate genes) as well as modelling the evolution of population divergence. In addition to the data gathered throughout the project a dataset of >600 birds from the last years is available for analysing the contemporary evolution of reproductive isolation.
The successful candidate should have a strong background in evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, genetics and advanced statistical analyses. Further experience in working with birds will be beneficial. A Diplom/M.Sc. degree in Biology or a related subject will be required. A driving licence and the availability of an own car would be useful for getting to field sites. We expect the candidate to have good communication skills and the ability to work independently

A PhD student position in Neuroscience is offered for the investigation of chromatic signal processing in the mammalian retina (for details seewww.fg-retina.uni-oldenburg.de/en/18947.html). Our approach employs optical, electrophysiological as well as anatomical techniques to investigate the functional properties of retinal neurons and the connectivity of the microcircuits they are embedded in.

Networked Control Systems (NCS) are control systems where the spatially distributed control elements (sensors, actuators and controllers) communicate over a shared communication network which might lead to time varying delays and information losses. Therefore, the design and analysis of these systems have to take the effects of the communication links into account. Smart power grid is a concept where, among others, the high percentage of renewable energy sources leads to a qualitatively new dynamic behaviour which requires new control approaches. It is expected that real-time information exchange between the control elements will be necessary for optimizing the performance of the grid. Therefore, the sensitivity of the control design with respect to delays and information losses will be of high importance.
The PhD work will focus on the design of novel NCS design concepts, among others, in:
a) wind park control
b) weak grids with a high percentage of renewable sources.
The candidates should have a master (or equivalent) degree in Electrical Engineering with an excellent academic record and be familiar with control theory and with the concepts of power generation and distribution, preferably with renewable energy sources (wind and solar). PhD position: Host-Parasite Coevolution
We invite applications for a PhD position in the group of Animal Evolutionary Ecology at the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity, University of Münster, Germany (http://ieb.uni-muenster.de/).
With the project host-parasite coevolution will be investigated, using the three spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus as a host and the cestode Schistocephalus solidus as a macroparasite. The research concept is based on comparisons of host-parasite pairs from different locations with differential evolution of parasite-virulence and host-resistance. In laboratory infection experiments, virulence traits of the parasite and immune traits of the hosts will be investigated, both, on the functional and molecular level. Excellent fish keeping facilities are available, which allow the controlled manipulation of temperature to mimic environmental change. Available techniques include micro array, quantitative PCR and flow cytometry.
Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in biology or a related field. Background in evolutionary biology, immunology or parasitology and experience with cellular or molecular techniques are advantageous. Working language of the lab is English.
The project is supervised by Dr. Jörn Peter Scharsack and Prof. Joachim Kurtz and funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG; position according to TV-L E13/2). The project is part of the German priority program SPP 1399 on Host-Parasite Coevolution and thus includes comprehensive interactions with various research groups, e.g. for state-of-the-art genomic analyses, in particular with the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Biology and the IFM-Geomar.

The aim of the project is to characterize the contribution of early neuroimmune responses in the development of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) within the retina by studying microglial activity.
Impaired vision is the leading symptom and a long-term problem in juvenile NCL. Therefore, targeted immune-related therapies blocking retinal microglia activation and possibly retinal degeneration could be helpful to preserve vision in JNCL patients.

Research areas include Evolutionary Biology, Parasitology, Genomics, Immunology, Bioinformatics, and more.
The priority program offers cutting edge, cross-disciplinary research. Host-parasite coevolution is used as a powerful and versatile model for analysing the causes and processes of evolutionary adaptation across scales (from genomes to ecosystems).
The program is funded by the German Science Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) across various locations in Germany: Berlin, Bonn, Gießen, Halle, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Kiel, Köln, Leipzig, München, Münster, Osnabrück, Plön, Regensburg.
We invite applications from highly qualified candidates of any nationality. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to disabled applicants in case of equivalent qualification.

Description : PhD fellowships (Lichtenberg-Stipendien) are available in the newly founded International PhD program Catalysis for Sustainable Synthesis (CaSuS) funded by the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony at Georg-August-University Göttingen. We are seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for research projects in the Institutes of Inorganic Chemistry, Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. The interdisciplinary program provides exciting research opportunities in the field of catalysis chemistry with main focus on molecular catalysis. The high-level teaching program contains lectures and courses in all relevant state-of-the-art technologies as well as excursions, conferences and secondary skill courses. The program is intended for selected applicants from all countries holding an excellent academic degree (Master degree, German Diplom or equivalent) in chemistry or closely related fields. It provides fellowships of Euro 1.500 per month for up to 3 years. The program starts in October 2009 and application deadline is 15th of August. International Doctoral Program -Giessen Graduate School for the Life Sciences (GGL)
The International Giessen Graduate School for the Life Sciences (GGL) of the Faculties for Medicine and Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Agricultural, Nutritional and Environmental Sciences, Biology and Chemistry as well as the Ph.D. Program of the Faculties of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine invite applicants for the Doctoral Programs in the Life Sciences.
The Doctoral Programs consist of a three-year interdisciplinary curriculum combined with an experimental project leading to a dissertation. Each doctoral researcher will be supervised by two professors from different faculties and will benefit from our Doctoral Researcher Development Program. Seminars and courses are conducted in English; German language courses are offered for international students. Depending on the project selected and own qualifications students may receive a stipend and may be eligible to register for one of the doctoral degrees offered at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Ph. D., Dr. med., Dr. med. dent., Dr. biol. hom., Dr. med. vet., Dr. biol. anim., Dr. rer. nat., Dr. agr. and Dr. oec. troph).
Applicants may choose between eight interdisciplinary research sections: Man, Nutrition and Environment; Infection and Immunology; Heart, Lung and Blood Vessels; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Neurosciences; Reproduction in Man and Animals; Stress Resistance and Adaptation; Synthetic Molecules and Materials for the Life Sciences. Doctoral Fellowships of the DLGS – Dresden Leibniz Graduate School
(2nd cohort 2010 – 2012)
“Dealing with Change – Regional Strategies in Times of Demographic, Economic, and Climate Change”
The DLGS – Dresden Leibniz Graduate School is a joint activity of the IOER (Leibniz Institute of Ecological and Regional Development, Dresden) and the TU Dresden in co-operation with the ARL (Academy for Spatial Research and Planning, Hanover).
Beginning in January 2010, the DLGS announces
8 Doctoral Fellowships
for three years as the 2nd cohort of the Graduate School. The fellowships are in accordance with DFG grant rates for the new Länder (1.340,- EUR per month).
The 1st cohort of doctoral students of the DLGS (2008-2010) addresses the theme of “Demographic Change and Regional Development Strategies.” The announcement of the 2nd cohort takes this theme a step further and pays more attention to linking demographic change with other long-run developments (such as climate change or structural economic developments). Doctoral students may focus on new concepts for dealing with change and uncertainty (e. g., resilience) and on implementation strategies for regional development.
The first year is devoted to intensive work in courses and on the doctoral thesis. Workshops about qualitative and quantitative methods, international events, and summer schools offer opportunities to acquire special skills and general competencies. The interdisciplinary composition of the group and the support provided by DLGS partners as well as possible research visits abroad enable graduates to rapidly complete innovative doctorates. Graduates will work in Dresden.
This announcement addresses graduates (M.A., M.Sc., or equivalent) in
· Spatial Planning (including City and Regional Planning, Landscape Planning) and Geography,
· Social Sciences (including Sociology, Economics).
Applications from outside of Germany are particularly welcome. Applicants should be capable of fluently speaking and writing English, of cooperating in teams, and of taking up residence at the work location. Fellowship holders must comply with the regulations for a doctoral degree enacted by the relevant faculties of the TU Dresden.
