Pennsylvania State University (PSU) postdoctoral fellowship program

The application deadline for the 2010-2011 fellowship program is November 16, 2009.

The postdoctoral fellows program runs from August through June each year. Fellows are expected to be in residence and to be active in PSU’s community of scholars. During their residency, fellows have no teaching or administrative responsibilities. In addition to focusing on research and publications, fellows participate in monthly professional development seminars as well as writing for publication sessions. Each fellow is matched with a mentor—generally, a senior scholar in the field who understands the importance of supporting and nurturing junior scholars. Fellows receive a competitive salary, health benefits, relocation support, and a research budget. Each fellow will have access to office space and a computer.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology, USA

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas of biology supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology. The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site. For FY 2010, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology and (2) Biological Informatics. In future years, these areas will change as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves; and this solicitation will be changed to reflect the areas being funded. The fellowships are also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented young scientists in their research groups. The research and training plan of each fellowship must address important scientific questions in contemporary biology within the scope of the BIO Directorate and the specific guidelines in this fellowship program solicitation. Because the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their careers, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the availability of BIO fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the Fellows.

Postdoctoral positions in Visual Science

Postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Christophe Ribelayga, Ph.D. in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Research in the lab is focused on circadian rhythms and neuronal plasticity and directed at elucidating the retinal cell types and mechanisms critical for circadian organization of retinal function (for instance, see Ribelayga et al., Neuron, 2008). These positions require a background in basic cell and molecular biology techniques (e.g. immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, organotypic culture, HPLC). In addition, experience in electrophysiology, in particular single-cell patch-clamp and intracellular recordings in whole-mount retinas, is desirable, although not strictly required but the candidates will be expected to learn those techniques. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or relevant field, and have a working understanding of biological rhythms and/or retinal neurophysiology. A minimum commitment for 2-3 years is desired. Excellent training and interaction with other vision scientists within the department and on campus are available. The Fellowships will be competitively available for two years in any laboratory in the United States carrying out ground-based, space-related biomedical/biotechnological research in accordance with the NSBRI’s goals. The program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or persons with pre-existing visas obtained through their sponsoring institutions. Postdoctoral Fellows will become a member of an NSBRI integrated countermeasure development team.

Two-Year Fellowship at the Medici Archive Project

The Medici Archive Project (MAP) is offering a two-year fellowship (15 February 2009 – 15 February 2011) with fifteen months of fulltime document assessment and description for the Documentary Sources database onsite at the Archivio di Stato in Florence and five months of independent research on a topic related to art history and/or history of architecture and the Mediceo del Principato archival corpus (1537-1743), carried out in one 5-month segment in the second year of the fellowship period. Fellows will have the following qualifications: a completed Ph.D. or the equivalent in art history and/or history of architecture relevant to Early Modern European history and culture; fluency in English and Italian (as well as knowledge of other languages including French and Latin); substantial research experience with original documentary material; the ability to work with computer database programs and commitment to a scholarly career involving archival research. The fellowship stipend is $40,000 plus an allowance for travel expenses. This fellowship is offered to a United States Citizen or United States Resident. This fellowship is supported by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and may be extended for a third and final year, pending available funding. Postdoctoral position in peripheral vision and image enhancement

A postdoctoral position to study image enhancement for peripheral vision is available immediately at the laboratory of Bosco Tjan at the University of Southern California.

We are looking for a creative individual with solid training in visual psychophysics. Experience in low vision research or fMRI is desirable but not required. Good writing skills and competency in computer programming (any language) and quantitative methods are essential.

The lab (http://tlab.usc.edu) is supported by multiple grants from the NIH. The group dynamic of the lab is friendly, open, and collaborative. We occupy a newly renovated space with a great view from the top floor of a ten-story building. The lab is well-equipped, and our research-dedicated fMRI center, for which Bosco is one of the founders, is conveniently located in an attached building.

USC has a strong and vibrant research community in vision (http://cvst.usc.edu/), covering topics as diverse as retinal and cortical physiology, visual cognition, computational vision, and retinal prosthesis. Our lab has active collaborations with several of these groups.
