PhD research fellowship position at Department of Engineering Cybernetics within nonlinear model predictive control

There is a PhD research fellowship position vacancy at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, to work with next-generation optimization-based predictive control. The position is offered for a period of 4 years, 25% of which goes into mandatory work for the Department.

Optimization-based predictive control (or nonlinear model predictive control) has reached a fairly mature stage as far as basic theory and numerical algorithms are concerned. However, there is still progress to be made when it comes to how to combine good control performance with economic performance, particularly during large load changes, product grade changes, etc. The successful candidate will improve state-of-the-art by developing new formulations with analysis of closed-loop properties. The work will take place in an active research group with industrial and international interactions.

Applicants must have a MSc (or siv.ing.) degree in control systems or similar. Solid scientific qualifications, relevant MSc research topics and personal qualities are important. Foreign applicants must document a TOEFL score of 600 or higher. PhD positions in earth observation/remote sensing
Description : 3-5 PhD positions in earth observation/remote sensing are available at the Department of Physics and Technology, University of Tromsø, Norway. The University of Tromsø has 3-5 vacant research fellow positions in earth observation/remote sensing for applicants who would like to complete a PhD degree. The positions are organized under the Department of Physics and Technology, and the research fellows will be enrolled in the Barents Remote Sensing School (BARESS), which is a research school in earth observation at the University of Tromsø. The desired research area is Earth observation/remote sensing, specifically using SAR (synthetic aperture radar) and PolSAR (polarimetric SAR) data, addressing research problems like: • change detection, • marine target detection (ships, icebergs, oil spill), • sea surface dynamics studies (wind, waves, currents), • land cover classification (vegetation, forest, sea ice, glaciers), • physical and/or statistical modelling, • methodology for data analysis and multi-sensor data fusion. The successful applicants must document background in mathematics and physics, and one or several of the subjects: statistics, signal and image processing, and pattern recognition. PhD fellowship in Invertebrate Nematology/ Integrated Pest Management

Bioforsk – the Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research – is a national R&D institute under the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food, with approximately 450 employees. The main areas of competence are linked to food quality and safety, agriculture and rural development, environmental protection and natural resource management. The R&D activities of Bioforsk are organized in seven research divisions, located in different regions of Norway.

PhD fellowship in Invertebrate Nematology/ Integrated Pest Management

A 4-year PhD-fellowship is available at Bioforsk, Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research, Plant Health and Plant Protection Division, Entomology and Nematology Department, Ås, Norway.

The position is part of a new project entitled ‘Elements in integrated pest management of the invasive Iberian slug,Arion lusitanicus, in agriculture’. The main aim of the project is todevelop an Integrated Pest Management protocol that can be tested against the Iberian slug,Arion lusitanicus, in field grown crops (strawberries, vegetables and managed grassland).

The PhD student will focus his/her work on the biological component of IPM, by studying slug parasitic nematodes with emphasis on the commercially available nematodePhasmarhabditis hermaphrodita.The main aim of the PhD study will be to understand the basic biology and ecology of the slug parasitic nematode and the host-parasite relationship in the developmental stages of the Iberian slug. Experiments will be conducted in the laboratory and the field. Part of the work will involve the use and testing of molecular techniques.

The project is in collaboration with the University of Bergen, Norway, Cardiff University, UK and University of Aberdeen UK.

The purpose of the doctoral fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The PhD-fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the University of Life Sciences, Ås (UMB). The applicant must have obtained undergraduate (cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (cand. scient. or M.Sc. level) degrees. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. Additional duties at the institute outside the scope of the PhD thesis will consist of 25 % of total time at a maximum.

A PhD research scholarship for the project “Modelling of thermo-hydraulic phenomena in small diameter channels with mixed refrigerants” is available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Division of Fluid Mechanics, Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology.

The objective of the current project is to develop and apply new heat transfer models for the prediction of heat transfer and two-phase flow characteristics in small diameter channel refrigeration systems involving mixture refrigerants. The multiscale nature of the multicomponent thermo-hydraulic problem will be tackled with diffuse interface methods to simulate mesoscale effects and non-local continuum theory to describe the macro¬microscale phenomena. This model should be able to predict the variation in the heat transfer capabilities with composition, and also with respect to single component refrigerants behavior. Complementary experimental work could also be considered.

The PhD candidate is expected to hold a master’s level degree in a subject relevant for the PhD project and to have a good combination of knowledge and skills in the following areas:

• good knowledge of fluid dynamics / fluid physics

• good know ledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics

• mathematical modeling and numerical methods

• scientific computing and programming Some acquaintance with multiphase flow, multi scale methods, microdevices and experimental work will be useful.

Study Africa in Uppsala - Study Scholarships for Nordic Countries

Study Africa in Uppsala - Study scholarships: The Nordic Africa Institute, which encourages research and studies on Africa in the Nordic countries, invites applications for a number of one month scholarships to study at the Institute’s library. The scholarship covers travel expenses to and from Uppsala and accommodation. Included in the scholarship is a small cash contribution intended to cover the extra cost of living while in Uppsala.

Who can apply?
The scholarships can be applied for by students at universities and colleges in the Nordic countries and by journalists and authors of textbooks.

The purpose of the scholarship
The primary purpose of the scholarship is to enable the
scholarship holders to use the library at Nordiska Afrikainstitutet, which contains a large collection of literature on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, government publications). The scholarship holders also have access to the Uppsala University Library, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

The scholarship
The study scholarship is intended to facilitate a one-month visit to Nordiska Afrikainstitutet in Uppsala. The scholarship covers travelling expenses for a return fare from study/work place to Uppsala and accommodation. Moreover, the study scholarship holder receives a small cash contribution to cover extra expenses while in Uppsala.

Application dates
The study scholarship are awarded biannually and the applications must be received at the Institute by

• 1 October for the period January-June, and
• 1 April for the period August-December.

PhD position in multispectral color imaging (Norway-France)

The purpose of the PhD position is to develop new methodologies for acquisition and reproduction of multispectral color images. Acquiring and reproducing color images using more than the conventional three color channels is a promising field of research, but several obstacles remain. Both the acquisition side and the reproduction side could be covered in this PhD thesis. Research directions which could be investigated includes new acquisition technologies using LED light sources and spectral filter arrays, spectral reflectance estimation, optimization of system parameters, spectral reproduction using inkjet printers, spectral gamut mapping, quality evaluation, combination of spectral and 3D information, compression and visualization of 3D multispectral data, and cultural heritage applications. Further specification of the topic and project plan will be done in collaboration with the selected candidate.

The PhD scholarship has a duration of three years, and will be carried out in collaboration between The Norwegian Color Research Laboratory at Gjøvik University College in Gjøvik, Norway and the Laboratoire d’Electronique, Informatique et Image (LE2I UMR-CNRS 5158) at the University of Burgundy in Auxerre, France. The PhD candidate will spend approximately equal time in the two laboratories, starting in France in September 2009, under the supervision of Professor Yvon Voisin (Auxerre), Associate Professor Alamin Mansouri (Auxerre) and Professor Jon Y. Hardeberg (Gjøvik). The scholarship is partially funded by the Regional Council of Burgundy, and amounts to EUR 1350 per month.
