Announcement: acceptance of applications for the Doctoral Programme in
‘Biodiversity, Genetics & Evolution’, year 2009/ 2010

The University of Lisbon (UL) and the University of Porto (UP) have a joint Doctoral Programme in ‘Biodiversity, Genetics & Evolution’ (BIODIV), in the area of Biological Sciences. The programme is organized by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), with the collaboration of the Centre for Environmental Biology (CBA/ FCUL), Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO/ UL), Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) and Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP). These Units develop research of international excellence in Biodiversity, Functional Ecology, Phylogenetics, Evolution, Behaviour, Theoretical Biology, Developmental Biology and Bioinformatics, among other fields, and are equipped with high tech laboratories, as well as a Field Station.

BIODIV is a graduate programme that leads to the acquisition of a PhD degree in several specialties as indicated in the corresponding plans (for further informations see http://cba.fc.ul.pt and http://www.fc.up.pt/fcup/pe/bolonha/curso.php?tc=PD&ano=2009&cod=bge). The programme includes a first year with several courses, seminars and
laboratory rotations, followed by three years of research corresponding to the development of the PhD project and dissertation. The students can take advantage of the resources available in both Universities during the entire period of the programme, though they are registered, and mainly affected to one of the two Universities.

Conditions to apply to BIODIV are the following: i) Having a graduate degree (’Licenciatura’ or equivalent) in Biology or related areas, obtained previous to the Bologna Process; ii) Having a Master degree in Biology or related areas; iii) Having equivalent habilitations; and iv) Having a curriculum that certifies capacity to apply for a PhD programme.

The scholarship covers a maximum of 24 months (2 years), from March 2010 to February 2012. Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0/ 4.3 every semester to maintain fellowship eligibility.

1. Tuition fee: The KT&G Foundation will provide tuition fee for Spring 2010 through Fall 2011 (up to 4 semesters).
2. Stipend: The KT&G Foundation will provide a monthly stipend of KRW 1,000,000(= USD 892) for up to 24 months.

IV. Obligations

1. Participation in a field trip, a roundtable conference prepared by the Foundation
2. Participation in events and activities upon request from the school or the foundation
3. Submission of a report on your life in Korea two months prior to your graduation and a copy of your Master’s thesis
4. KT&G Fellowship recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.3 scale in order to retain their scholarship. If they fail in this requirement at any time, their scholarship will be cancelled and they will be ineligible to receive it again in further semesters.

Scholarship Program

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), announces the availability of funds to support up to six (6) scholarships for students currently pursuing their doctorate degrees. The scholarship recipients will conduct doctoral-level studies related to the efforts of CDC/NCEH linking the built environment with public health or to the efforts of CDC/NCEH related to public health and climate change.

Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to pursue their studies while receiving guidance and input from CDC experts in two key areas of study: the relationship between public health and community design; and, the relationship between public health and climate change.

1910 Centenary PhD Scholarships for Developing World Students in UK

1910 Centenary PhD Scholarships

Langham Partnership is working with a number of centres of theological training in the UK to offer four PhD scholarships starting in October 2010, as a way of marking the centenary of the Edinburgh World Missionary Conference of 1910. The scholarships are for PhD students from the Majority (Developing) World. They are available for study at Oxford Centre of Mission Studies, Edinburgh University, London School of Theology and International Christian College, Glasgow.

Langham Partnership has over the past 30 years helped to sponsor almost 300 scholars to complete PhD degrees. The work of the Langham Partnership scholarship programme is focused on the Majority (Developing) World, and the 1910 Centenary PhD Scholarships are intended to benefit students from there. The Edinburgh World Missionary Conference of 1910 anticipated the predominant role which church leaders from the Global South would play in the future, and this scheme is therefore an appropriate way of marking its centenary. The Scholarships represent the commitment of the four institutions to engage in dialogue with churches in the Developing World (Majority), and assist with the training of strategic church leaders from there.

Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her adult life to revolutionising the way we think about technology and dismantling barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields. Her combination of technical expertise and fearless vision continues to inspire and motivate countless women to become active participants and leaders in creating technology.

As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to furthering Anita’s vision, we are pleased to announce The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship: Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through the scholarship, we aim to encourage women to excel in computing and technology, and become active role models and leaders.

Multiple scholarships will be awarded based on the strength of candidates’ academic performance, leadership experience and demonstrated passion for computer science. A group of female Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD student finalists will be chosen from the applicant pool. The scholarship recipients will each receive a €7,000 (or equivalent) scholarship.

In June 2010, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to visit Google’s Engineering Centre in Zurich for a networking retreat. International Cancer Technology Transfer Fellowships

The fellowships are funded by a group of cancer institutes, leagues, societies, associations, foundations, and governmental agencies in North America, Europe, and Australia. The aims of the awards are threefold: to facilitate rapid international transfer of cancer research and clinical technology; to allow exchange knowledge and enhance skills in basic, clinical, behavioural, and epidemiological areas of cancer research; and in cancer control and prevention to allow acquisition of up-to-date clinical management, diagnostic, and therapeutic expertise.

They are particularly aimed at investigators and clinicians working in places where such teaching is not yet available and where the necessary facilities exist to apply and disseminate the new skills upon return.

Fellowships are open to appropriately qualified investigators, pathologists, epidemiologists, cancer registrars, behavioural scientists, tobacco control activists, laboratory technicians, clinicians, and general practicioners, generally in the early stages of their careers; and clinicians who are established in oncology practice.

Experts from any country, who have been invited to teach these specialised skills at institutes abroad, are also eligible to apply (reverse flow ICRETTs).

Candidates who are already physically present at the proposed host institute whilst their applications are under consideration are not eligible for a UICC fellowship.

About 120–150 awards are available per year with an average award value for one-month stipend and travel of US$3,400. The maximum length is three months. Successful candidates usually receive UICC stipend support for up to one month only, while home or host institutes are expected to cover living costs for any additional periods. UICC also contributes to the least expensive international two-way (return) air fare or other appropriate form of transport.

Travel awards do not include costs for internal travel within the home or host countries. These and extra costs for visa, passports, airport taxes, etc. are the responsibility of the fellow. No financial support is provided for dependents.

The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) offers the DESY Fellowship Programme for young scientists in experimental particle physics and accelerator physics.

Fellows in Experimental Particle Physics are invited to participate in DESY’s particle physics research:

• Photon science
• Accelerator physics

Fellows in experimental particle physics are invited to participate in DESY’s particle physics research: The HERA experiments H1, ZEUS, HERMES, the AMANDA/IceCube experiment at the south pole and the preparations for experimentation at the future International Linear Collider ILC and R&D in particle detectors (FLC group).

Fellows in photon science are invited to participate in DESY’s research at the HASYLAB, which uses the storage rings DORIS and PETRA and the free electron laser FLASH.

Fellows in accelerator physics will contribute to the development, construction and operation of accelerator facilities (HERA, DORIS, FLASH, PETRA III, XFEL, ILC, PITZ).

Individuals who have recently completed their PhD and who are younger than 32 years are invited to apply.

Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY supports the careers of women and therefore encourages especially women to apply.

DESY Fellowships are awarded for a duration of two years with the possibility of a prolongation by one additional year. The salary for the fellowship is according to tariffs applicable for public service work.

The research must focus on a well-defined aspect of human development under the theme selected for the year (climate change and human development for 2009), and can be theoretical, applied, policy-oriented, or a combination. The Fellowship is intended for young PhD students, who are at an advanced dissertation stage working on a topic related to human development.

Human Development Media Fellowship

Qatar Foundation invites applications for the WISE Awards 2009 to support outstanding practice and achievements within the themes of Pluralism, Sustainability and Innovation in education. Two prizes will be awarded for each of these three themes.

Each of the six laureates will receive a WISE Prize Award of $20,000 at the Gala Dinner on November 17, 2009. Laureates will also be given the opportunity to showcase their projects during the WISE Forum.

The WISE Awards application process is open to individuals or teams of individuals from across the world and in all education sectors, to be supported by a letter of endorsement from senior management of their organization.

Laureates will be selected by a pre-jury then by an international jury consisting of 10 of the world’s leading experts in pluralism, sustainability and innovation in education, drawn from public institutions, civil society, the private sector, international organizations, universities and social entrepreneurs.
