Postdoctoral Positions in Autoimmune and Vaccine Research

Description : Three postdoctoral positions are immediately available at National Taiwan University in Taipei, TAIWAN to study the immune response to the vaccine adjuvants and ligands of nuclear hormone receptors. Research is focused on transcriptional regulation of proliferation of antigen presentation progenitor cells, employing techniques of immunology, molecular and cellular biology in the animal models, with particular interest in the differentiation of bone marrow hematopoietic and neuronal stem/progenitor cells. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. with a strong background in immunology, molecular/cell biology and fewer than four years of postdoctoral experience. The successful applicant is expected to have strong ability and high motivation, and be capable of working independently, with strong communication and writing skills. Experience with multicolor flow cytometry, culturing primary cells, and in vivo work with animal models is highly desirable. Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience. Graduate school in population genetics, Finland

The Finnish graduate school in population genetics

The graduate school in population genetics is funded by the Department of Education and the Academy of Finland. The school builds a doctoral program and trains graduate students in the broad area of population genetics. The students take formal courses and carry out research work and complete a doctoral thesis in about four years.

The students entering the school should join a research project led by one of the supervisors that are members of the school. The topics covered by different projects include evolutionary genetics, bioinformatics, genetic epidemiology, gene mapping, plant and animal breeding, conservation genetics, molecular anthropology and archaeology,
and risks associated with GMO. The working place depends on the research group and the supervisor (http://cc.oulu.fi/~biolwww/PopGenSchool/ )

The salary is set by the Department of Education which finances the graduate school, but the local university (research group) can pay a somewhat higher salary that includes some teaching duties.

The school announces seven positions for PhD students, starting at the beginning of 2010. The positions are maximally for four years. The application should include (when applicable):

HORIZON ENERGY SCHOLARSHIP 2010

This two-year scholarship is offered by Horizon Energy in conjunction with the Eastern Bay Energy Trust to develop
industry skills for the benefit of the Eastern Bay of Plenty

• Candidates must be entering the third year of a Bachelor of Engineering (electrical) degree in 2010 (Heavy Power option).

• The scholarship will be awarded subject to evidence of acceptance into the approved course.

• The scholarship includes $1000 towards books and course related costs, holiday employment with
Horizon Energy during years three and four of the degree, and possible future employment in the company, upon completion of the degree.

• The Eastern Bay Energy Trust’s contribution will cover the candidate’s course fees up to $6000 per year, for years three and four of the degree.

Scholarship funding for year four is provisional upon the candidate satisfactorily completing the prior year’s study.

PhD- Postdoc Positions at Seoul National University

Two PostDoctoral (this call) and several PhD positions (call later this year) are available for my lab at Seoul National University in the newly formed Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS,http://bcs.snu.ac.kr/). We are seeking talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral research assistants and research fellows with a PhD awarded in physics, mathematics, engineering, or computer science; prior postdoctoral experience in the neurosciences is desirable but not necessary. Our lab links network features of neural systems (e.g. Cereb Cortex, 2009; PLoS Comput Biol, 2006) with dynamics and behaviour (New J Phys, 2007; Frontiers Neurosci, 2008). The fellowship positions will involve either: network and time series analysis of experimental data (MEA and fMRI) or large-scale simulations of brain activity based on anatomical connectivity (seehttp://www.biological-networks.org/).

The BCS Department is generously funded by the World Class University (WCU) project of the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. BCS faculty and laboratories are housed in newly constructed space on the main SNU campus. State-of-the-art equipment includes: a dedicated 3T human MRI (128-channel head coil, sMRI, fMRI, DTI, MRS etc), 128 channel high-density EEG system (including Curry system), two-photon microscopy, visually-guided patch-clamp rigs, in vivo electrophysiological apparatus and high-performance computing plus molecular biological and biochemical facilities. Seoul is a vibrant city and Seoul National University is #50 in the Times World University Rankings. English is the official language of the BCS.

The bacterium Bacillus subtilis is a single celled Gram-positive soil bacterium that can exist as part of an integrated, multicellular community called a biofilm. Biofilm formation is a complex process that depends on cell fate differentiation that occurs in spatio-temporal manner. Biofilms are important in all sectors of our economy with examples ranging from human health – they form the basis of chronic infections, to bioremediation – they are required for the effective treatment of sewage. B. subtilis has advanced genetic and molecular biology tools ideal for studying the complex development of biofilm communities.

The appointed postdoctoral scientist will be part of an interdisciplinary team and will be required to combine classical genetic techniques with state of the art imaging analysis, at the systems biology level, to help elucidate how biofilm formation is controlled.

Candidates should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD. This preferably would include microscopy and microbiology techniques. The post is available for up to 36 months in the first instance and is available from the 1st November 2009.

Law Scholarships in University of Cambridge, UK, for Polish Students

The Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in the University of Cambridge is pleased to announce the opening of a competition for two scholarships, funded by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London. The scholarships have been named after the Polish Judge and international lawyer, Bohdan Winiarski. The scholarships are primarily aimed at younger Polish scholars in the early years of their career. Each scholarship is intended to cover a stay of 8-12 weeks at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in 2010.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for the scholarships should comply with the following:

• have Polish citizenship;• be fluent in English;
• be graduates of a Polish university (candidates should already hold a masters degree, other applications will not be accepted);
• be associated with a Polish university or another institution in Poland dealing with international law;
• specify a project on some aspect of international law on which they will work while resident at the Lauterpacht Centre. Preferably, the project should be published as a result of the visit.

HOW TO APPLY
Applications should consist of the following documents:

Postdoc Position in Immune Signalling

Postdoc Position in Immune Signalling

Applications are invited for a postdoc position in the newly-established Host-Pathogen Interaction Laboratory at the Institute of Immunology, National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM).

The position is funded for 3 years by the Irish Health Research Board (HRB) and available from October 2009. The successful candidate will be working on a project to determine the exact molecular mechanism behind the effect of DEAD-box helicase 3 on type I interferon induction and its manipulation by viruses (Schroder et al., EMBO J. 2008).

Candidates should have a PhD in the biological sciences, be highly motivated and organised, be able and willing to become a major player within a new research team and have experience with the investigation of cell signalling pathways. In addition, experience with one or more of the following techniques would be a major asset: EMSA, CHIP, RT-PCR, FPLC, flow cytometry, kinase assays or lentiviral gene transfer.

The Institute of Immunology at NUI Maynooth is one of the leading centres for Immunology research in Ireland and is located only 30 km outside of Dublin with good transport links.

The DERI Unit for Natural Language Processing has a focus on applied research in ontology-based information extraction, semantic-level text mining and the use of linguistic and semantic methods in information retrieval. UNLP develops methods for the efficient application of NLP tools in combination with domain semantics as specified in ontologies, thesauri and other knowledge organisation systems for relevant use cases. The DERI Unit for Information Mining and Retrieval focuses on methods to harness the massiv!
e amounts of dynamically-produced, semi-structured data produced by Web communities. UIMR examines techniques for the selection and combination of features in collaborative information spaces. Another focus is the analysis and modelling of the dynamics of online communities in order to understand the structures and behaviours which underlie topic development and diffusion. Applications of this work lie in the development of richer personalisation, filtering and recommendation techniques using user preferences, constraints and context, content analysis, content semantics and collaborative and social relationships.

Salary range: €40,578 - €49,341 per annum, (commensurate with qualifications and experience)

PhD Studentship: Bioadhesion in barnacles

Applicants are invited to study for a PhD in Bioadhesion. Developing glues that work in wet environments would be extremely useful in surgical applications. Barnacles have evolved underwater mechanisms to cement themselves to all sorts of surfaces, producing strong bonds via a multi-protein complex. The nature of this complex and its synthesis is poorly known and will be characterized during this study. Analysis of the cement apparatus will involve ultrastructure analyses and histology while investigating protein(s) composition of cements will entail protein mass analyses. Preliminary investigations of structure/function and mechanical properties of cement proteins will also be addressed.

Candidates must meet College of Science NUIG requirements i.e. either M.Sc. or B.Sc. (grade 2.1 or equivalent) in biological sciences, biomedical engineering or related disciplines. Enthusiasm for research and an ability to work independently are essential. Experience in histology, histochemistry, molecular biology or protein chemistry would be an advantage, as would a full clean driving license. The position will involve travel between collaborating institutions. The position is for four years and is based in the laboratory of Dr Anne Marie Power, Department of Zoology, Martin Ryan Institute, NUI Galway (http://mri.nuigalway.ie), in collaboration with Dr Janek Von Byern at the Cell Imaging & Ultrastructure Research Unit, University of Vienna, Austria (http://www.univie.ac.at/cius/us/en/index.htm ) and Dr Ingo Grunwald at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology & Applied Materials Research, Bremen, Germany. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in research cruises. Description : A Ph.D. position is available for up to four years in the Department of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. Our laboratory is interested in how plant development is controlled by the regulation of gene expression and protein stability. The Ph.D. thesis project will focus on the characterization of transcriptional regulation by components of the ubiquitin system in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. To this end, a combination of state-of-the-art molecular genetics and genome-wide methods such as microarray analysis and ultra high-throughput sequencing will be used. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background and interest in molecular biology and/or biochemistry and/or plant biology, who is able to work independently, but yet enjoys working in a team. The ideal applicant should have previous experience with key techniques of molecular biology and/or biochemistry and/or plant biology. Basic knowledge of bioinformatics is an advantage but not a must.
